Close Call Today with Betsy
You may remember I posted a few weeks about Betsy's vet visit and how the vet put her on diuretics (Lasix aka Novo-furosemide) to reduce the fluid buildup around her heart and lungs? They have been working very well and she's not been coughing nearly as much. The unfortunate side effects are thirst and copious urination, but we can manage that for the honour of having her around fairly healthy for a little longer.
This morning I went out for a few groceries. I was only gone about an hour and DH was working in his office upstairs. Apparently he heard a loud yelp and ran downstairs to find Betsy flailing on her back fighting for air. She had voided herself in the dog bed and he was soaked when he picked her up. He turned her upside down and shook her gently, and then opened her air passage with his finger (this is only easy to do once she is almost unconscious as she clenches/bites when she's still aware). He was very frightened that she was gone and held and rocked her in the cool air outside for about 10 minutes. And by the time I got home, she was as right as rain! It might be Thanksgiving only in the States today, but we both have a lot to be grateful for.

Wow! How frightening! I'm glad she is ok.

"If I were a pediatrician and a mother told me, "it's just too hard making healthy food everyday for my kid, I'm just going to feed Total cereal everyday, it's 100% nutritionally complete," we'd all feel sorry for her kid. I am a vet, and when people tell me "I've found a really good dry food, I think I'll feed it everyday for the rest of my pets life," why don't we feel equally sad?" Dr. Karen Becker.
