Help! Penny ate chocolate!

Post  Pugsaunt on 10/15/2009, 1:03 am

Oh crap, what do I do now? When I had my back turned, Penny ate half of a large very chocolate chocolate chip cookie (the death by chocolate cookies) and broke into a bag of halloween candy (Hershey miniatures) and ate several of them. Now she's all over the place, looking for more. I'm gonna call the dogtor, but any suggestions would be great. I am totally freaked.

Oh no! Nancy, I think that it's dark chocolate that is the most dangerous, milk chocolate not as much...but hopefully your dogtor will be able to tell you what to do. hug dog

I found this link, it has levels and how much each different type of chocolate has:

I just called the emergency dogtor - we think she probably got 2, 2.5 at the most, ounces. The cookie was cocoa and dark chocolate chips, the candy was mixed milk and dark, more milk than dark. I have no way of knowing what she got out of the candy. So, acting on instructions, I just gave her 1 tbsp of peroxide and am waiting for the urps. If she doesn't urp by 15 minutes after the dose (10:35 my time), I can repeat it. I got probably about half of it down her, so since she hasn't barfed by now, I'll redo it at 10:35, and call again if no barfing. Sheesh, these furkids! I just gained a bunch more grey hairs, and I had very few brown left to begin with.

ETA: She was being pretty hyper there for a while, but has calmed down. My heart rate has slowed below 150 bpm.

She is now lying on my feet. Chilling. Sheesh. I'm still gonna peroxide her again, though. It is a relief that she is not being hyper any more. Thanks, all.

Do you have a syringe or eye dropper? That's the best way to the the hydrogen peroxide down their little throats.

The bathroom floor will never be the same, and who cares? She is calmed down and empty. My heart rate is back to normal. I'm still going to sleep with one eye and ear open. My little girl. I swear, I aged another 10 years tonight.

Glad Penny is empty and hopefully none the worse for wear. I was starting to get a little more worried about your own heart rate. Sleep well, both of you.

I'm glad to hear she got it all out. I hope you are both sleeping soundly and wake up feeling much better.

We had a lab get into chocolate once while we were gone. We came home to a room filled with diarrhea. He would only do it in that one room, thankfully. He was fine after that.

Do Penny and Murphy need "Chocoholics Anonymous"? Why do these pugs worry us so much??

I'm so glad the peroxide worked! Jeff and I tried peroxide and it was dismal. All we got was a pissed off pug and more on us than him.

Hugs to you and Penny. Tell Penny the meetings begin tonight. "Hi, my name is Murphy/Penny and I'm a naughty pug."
