How often should I bathe my pugs?

Post  Doodikins on 3/12/2010, 6:35 pm

According to "The New Pug" written by Shirley Thomas in 1990, a pug only needs a bath about four times a year. She advises brushing them everyday, and says this will keep them clean. I bathe my boys once a month and I am always amazed at how filthy they are. The water is dark brown! These pugs live indoors but roll in the grass and the dirt anytime they get a chance out on a walk or a visit to the park. I wash their faces and nose rolls every few days. Anyway, I wonder if I am drying their skin out by bathing them once a month. Any opinions? Thanks!!!

I don't think you are drying out their skin by washing them just once a month, especially if you are using a gentle shampoo. Once a week or every two weeks, then personally, I think there is a greater chance of irritating their skin.

Our pugs get baths right about 3-5 times a year. We usually wait until they are super stinky but boy does the house smell like dog by then!

I'm the four times a year bather or when needed. So far Viv has only needed it once when she decided to help me garden, other than that they really don't get that dirty.

3 or 4 times a year for the pugs. The dogs that require grooming (pom and shih tzu) get it more often as part of being clipped.

I'm also in the 3-4 times a year camp, although Sammy, my pug/Frenchie mix does get doggie-smelling faster than Jackson does and may hasten that schedule up a 5th time a year. If they just get surface-dirty from playing in dusty areas, you might want to consider wiping them down with baby wipes after you come inside. If they get muddy/funky/gross after rolling in mud puddles/roadkill/poop then, yes, a bath is probably warranted.

3 times a year here as well (once each season excluding winter as they just don't really need it then).
This of course can be ran askew should someone roll in something icky but it's a general average.

I'm a 4-5 tomes a year pug washer. I have wipes I use for spot cleaning and freshening up. In all honesty, the only reason I go to a groomer is for nails and anal glands.

"If I were a pediatrician and a mother told me, "it's just too hard making healthy food everyday for my kid, I'm just going to feed Total cereal everyday, it's 100% nutritionally complete," we'd all feel sorry for her kid. I am a vet, and when people tell me "I've found a really good dry food, I think I'll feed it everyday for the rest of my pets life," why don't we feel equally sad?"

We are "wash when stinky," too, which is probably only about 4 x a year, too. (Unless something happens that causes them to get extra dirty.) I've never counted. It is pretty seasonal, I'd say. Currently, though, with the snow melting and the mud in the back yard, the paws are getting extra baths!
