Sherman Needs Knee Surgery!

Post  Maryjo on 3/2/2010, 3:35 am

My sweet foster boy, Sherman, came up limping Saturday night. Turns out he has an old injury to one of his back knees. Poor guy!!

We're going to raise money for him thru bake sales and other sorts of events. Sherman will get the surgery right away, but we want to be able to pay the vet off eventually. The surgery will be about 1500-1700 dollars.

Oh no! Poor Sherman! I hope he does well with surgery and his required crate rest and he comes out as good as new!

What kind of surgery is he going to have to have? What will his recovery time be? Poor thing!

I forget what it is calleed, but the one to keep his knee from slipping in and out.

He will stay with Vickie for the two weeks following the surgery because his knee will be in a splint, she can watch him 24/7 during that time. Both at home, and at the her doggy daycare.

Then he'll come back over to me because Vickie has to go out of town. Shermy will need therapy several times a day and I can do that. I just can't keep him while he's in the splint.

He is about 6 years old, so we feel getting him the surgery now if the best thing for him. (As opposed to living on rimadyl and waiting. This won't be something he can 'work out').

Zoe had LP surgery when she was 7 months old! it was right after I got her. she was limping SO badly. it cost me $1200 at the time, but I had to get her spayed and microchipped as well. I think the recovery would have been MUCH easier had she not been a puppy. can you imagine crate resting a PUPPY for 30 days? I basically had to live in my bedroom, where the crate was.

we ended up doing water therapy. I put her in the tub and used a treat to get her to walk back and forth. she loved it! I'll see if I can find one of the pics of her by the tub.

good luck to Sherman! I'm sure he'll be good as new.

Ohhhh.. I'll have to consider water therapy when he's out of the splint. I'll ask Sherm's vet about it. Thanks for the idea!

I didn't have a choice. The other therapy required 2 people and it was just me. :(

she was so little in those pics!

Oh MJ - I just sent you an email. That is the exact kind of surgery my Ichiro went through!! Poor Sherman.

I'm so glad he will get the surgery right away, and he has Vickie and you to take care of him.

Water therapy is a great idea.

I'll keep my donations coming!

Surgery scheduled...

Post  Maryjo on 3/2/2010, 5:08 pm

Sherman's surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9th. I'll take him over to Vickie the night before, and she can run him out to the dogtor that morning.

Poor guy, but at least when this is over he'll be pain-free. His other knee seem fine at the moment.

Big hugs to Sherman and to you guys, too. You worry to death until they get out of surgery and then you stress to death during the recovery process becuse they are either not feeling well and acting very pathetic or they feel good and can't understand why you are holding them prisoner.

Speedy healing thoughts to you all!

Poor Sherm, but he's young enough that it should help a ton. Water therapy is great for bad knees. Lola did quite a bit until she buggered up her back and it's a nice low impact exercise. He won't want to be doing leash walks for awhile--that repetitive thud, thud on the knees is not good.
