Marlee's Many Jobs

Post  SacramentoPugs on 9/23/2009, 8:16 pm

Since Rhoda's retirement, Marlee has become the official working dog in our family. She's the official ambassador and education dog for the nonprofit animal welfare organization I work for, and she accompanies me to presentations at elementary schools about 3 times a week. Yesterday she met 100 kids and taught them how to safely meet a new dog (well, I helped a bit).

Rhoda used to be a wonderful education dog, but she let me know about 2 years ago that she was done -- we did a school-wide assembly for 350+ kids, each of whom gave Rhoda a little pat as they filed out. Rhoda tolerated that beautifully, but when they were gone, she looked me in the eyes, hung her head, and sighed. I knew it was retirement time.

Marlee was eager to take Rhoda's place in the classroom, and I can honestly say that she loves doing it even more than Rhoda ever did. Marlee can barely contain her excitement when we're approaching a school -- her idea of heaven is having 10 kids pet her at once. No treats needed to help her perform; she's so happy to be there that she behaves beautifully and does everything I ask the first time. I'm so proud of her.

Here's my little ambassador doing a meet and greet at the shelter with a group of scouts who collected items and money to donate:

I think Marlee's going to have a very long career.

Good for Rhoda for passing the torch to Marlee. I do similar things with Tank at my husband's school. Many of the kids there are from other cultures and have never experienced a dog as anything but an object of fear.

The picture with the scouts is darling.

While it makes me sad to think of Rhoda retiring, it's awesome that Marlee loves it so much. And her story is educational too. How awesome that you have another good outreach pug!

What a wonderful new job for Marlee! It sounds like she's the perfect fit.

"If I were a pediatrician and a mother told me, "it's just too hard making healthy food everyday for my kid, I'm just going to feed Total cereal everyday, it's 100% nutritionally complete," we'd all feel sorry for her kid. I am a vet, and when people tell me "I've found a really good dry food, I think I'll feed it everyday for the rest of my pets life," why don't we feel equally sad?"

How sweet, sounds like you still have many years of educating children! Thank you, to both of you.
