Sweet old pit mix

Post  northernwitch on 10/18/2011, 8:28 pm

I was evaluating dogs at the shelter again today and this guy was brought up. He's a pit mix, I'm pretty sure and was turned over as a "stray" with leash, poop bag and muzzle. Maybe a stray, maybe not. He was up for evaluation because the vet thought the dog looked at him funny. The poor old sod has got to be 10 and I think he's deaf as a post and his eye sight is not so great. So yeah, I bet he did look at the vet funny as he was trying to see him.

He was absolutely lovely. Somebody has loved this dog at some point. He knew sit, down, paw--all with hand signals--and wandered around offering his paw to Lorraine and I when he realized we had food. I could have left the shelter with him right then and there. We've contacted Bullies In Need and hope they will take him. He has no chance getting adopted at the shelter.

I think he's got some entropion going on and for sure has cataracts and he's a tad arthritic, but a sweet, sweet boy.

Patti Moore of Bullies In Need is well connected with the various pittie orgs, but I'll mention ElderBull to her. I think this guy is old enough to pass under the "grandfather" rule so we wouldn't have to foster him out of province. Here's the BIN website in case you're interested: http://bulliesinneed.ca/

And Trish--Lorraine and I are suckers for an old dog, especially one that is as lovely as this old man.

He's adorable!! I hope he gets a great new home very soon. I've decided since my Best Friends trip that I'm a big dog person. Don't tell the girls. Very Happy

I always had big dogs. It wasn't until my ex-husband insisted on a pug that I became a "pug person". Hope to get a big dog again one day, although there seems to always be another pug to fill the empty spot on the couch.

Me, too, Rebecca--or quasi big dogs as the border collies aren't that big. Lola turned me around on the little dog deal. But I honestly could have walked out with this guy--I was so taken with him. Mind you, I could have walked out with the rottie bitch we evaluated a couple of weeks ago as well.

If I was closer Blanche, I probably would have wanted that Rottie for myself. And, we could have had a cup of coffee in Fiestaware mugs talking about her. I didn't know you collected Post-86 Fiestaware too! (and yes I am nosey and read other people's secret santa answers!)

That's not nosey. That's just Xmas curiosity.

Yes, I'm pretty new to it. My sister has been collecting Fiestaware for years and years--both use-able and not. I got taken with it during my many visits to her place. I love the colours. But it's hard to find here. I ended up ordering my stuff online from dinnerware.com. GREAT deals.

I am heavy on the pastels and the black, cobalt, chartreuse. Those colors were the ones available when I got married in 1998. When I separated in 2002 and bought this old house, the storage is not as plentiful as my big house was. Love the new colors, but need to make room in my cupboards. We used to order directly from Homer Laughlin for some of the harder to find pieces. I will have to check out dinnerware.com.

All the Fiesta ware in the world seems to have congregated in Tulsa. You guys need to bring a freight train and go shopping in the local antique malls.

Yep, I grew up with a lab and a GSD mix. Cannot wait to get a big dog, there was a rottie spot lighted in our local paper the other day. Somebody reported to the pound that he had been in the same spot, in a back road pasture, for days. Looks like someone dropped him off and he was waiting for them Crying or Very sad Poor old guy was 8, had bone spurs and was going to need some serious vetting. If I had the extra $$$ I would've gotten him and then told hubby we had four!

Thank you Blanche, with out you and your partner, these dogs wouldn't stand a chance.

He looks like a sweet boy. He's got the curse of the black dog plus pit mix, I hope the rescue can help him! I'm glad you were able to evaulate him. And the vet saying he looked at him funny...sheesh.

Dear, sweet old boy! I hope he lands safely in a forever home. And yep, good luck in being adopted at a shelter being black, pit-mix AND ten. He needs a rescue.

Penny Lane has opened my eyes to the joys of the oldsters. Bless you, Blanche and Lorraine, and I'm saying a prayer that he finds a rescue soon.

Never fear. He WILL go into rescue. It's just a matter of which one. The shelter where he is is a great shelter (Toronto Animal Sevices) and they work with rescue all the time. They absolutely know he'll go nowhere in general adoption at the shelter and because of the breed ban, they need to be extra careful when they are dealing with any dog that could get tagged as a "pit bull, pit bull mix or pit bull type dog". The fact that he came into the shelter with a muzzle attached to his leash indicates that at some point he WAS tagged as one cause I sure don't see any temperament reason for him to have a muzzle.

The beautifully trained oldsters always make me scratch my head -- just WHERE did things go wrong for these dogs? Somebody obviously adored them once and put a lot of time and effort and love into training. How does that stop?

I'm a Fiestaware gal myself, but my colors are much more recent: seafoam, sunflower yellow, tangerine, and turquoise. I love that website, too, Blanche -- my mom ordered me most of my Fiesta stuff from there on two consecutive birthdays.

I have dinnerware for 8 all in different colours. I currently have turquoise, scarlett, tangerine, shamrock, plum, cobalt, sunflower and peacock, I think. I ordered the four piece settings.

Now I'd like to get the Mascarade flatware: http://www.dinnerwareusa.com/shop/catalog/handler~event~familySelected~pf_id~8714.htm
