Sam certainly has a smile on his face.
Do you have any idea what he weighs? Is he over weight or just a large pug? Two of my grand pugs weigh nearly 22 pounds but they are large pugs and the vet says not overweight for their size.

He's about 10 kg so 22+ lbs. He's a tad over weight, but not badly. Has an enormous neck and chest and a somewhat atrophied back end.

Some fawns grey really early so the grey is not much of a guide. I have known as grey as that from six or seven years old. Once he settles in you will have a better chance to assess his approximate age.
It may sound like a stupid thing to say, but...his tongue looks younger than 13. Around 10 maybe?

Not stupid, but now you've got me curious. How does a tongue show its age or lack thereof?Puggered wrote:It may sound like a stupid thing to say, but...his tongue looks younger than 13. Around 10 maybe?

**evil grin** Maybe, like men, it shrinks as the man gets older??
Re: He's here!
We just got back from my vet and she thinks he's maybe 8 or 9, but not 13. Has good muscle tone and good eyes that would indicate a younger than 13 dog. We'll see what the blood work tells us as I had a full geriatric panel done along with HW.
Re: He's here!
If he's only 8 or 9, there might be a chance of getting him adopted. He is a handsome guy.

From your lips to the Pug Gods ears, Candace. He really is a nice, nice guy. A bit anxious and a true velcro pug, but the poor sod has had a lot of upheaval in his recent history.
Interestingly, he and Meesh seem to be bonding.

A most handsome chap, is Sam. He certainly doesn't look 13, does he?

Handsome fellow he is. Puggles was real soft coated and shed even more than coarse haired pugs... if that is possible.

Yeah, he sheds like a maniac.
And the honeymoon is over--I think he's peed twice in my kitchen. And he has kennel cough. So belly band for him while I go out to dinner tonight.

Now that you ask, I had to sit down and think that through. For the first time in many years, I don't currently have a geriatric dog here to compare. I guess maybe it's one of those things that you subconsciously observe over the years and never really think about. But I think, that, by and large, the tongue tends to lose muscle mass in the elderly dog. Often it loses muscle tone as well, so that it appears longer and lolls out of the mouth which may not have happened when the dog was younger.
But somehow, to me, a thick meaty tongue on a very elderly dog looks wrong, they are generally thin in my experience, even if they were thick and meaty a few years prior. JMO, nothing to back that up really. It will be interesting to hear if others with geriatrics have noticed the same.
