Could my pug have a cold?
Chamuco has sniffles and has been doing that reverse sneeze thing more than usual. Could he have a cold? Should I do anything about it? He seems fine otherwise. Just slightly quieter than normal. Nothing that alarms me, though.

My guess would be kennel cough. Basically similar to a cold. Watch for coughing, runny nose. NOt usually an problem, but flat faced breeds can develop secondary infections like pneumonia.
Could also be seasonal allergies.

In my limited experience with KC, you'll know it if it IS KC. They really sound like they're going to die!

Nope--not necessarily. Not all dogs develop the cough which is what DOES tell you for sure that it is kennel cough. I've had two pugs that had KC but only had runny noses and sounded congested. Never coughed, but was KC.

Damn. I sure wish Kimchi had had that sort. I am still suffering from the effect of sleep depravation from worrying about her. She sounded TERRIBLE! I do hope that she built up an immunity to it. We seem have a KC carrier in our neighborhood - Kennel Cough Mary. (That's probably not even possible.)

Biggest vector for infection with kennel cough is the vaccine. Vaccinated dogs shed the virus for weeks afterwards. Not Afraid wrote:northernwitch wrote:Not Afraid wrote:In my limited experience with KC, you'll know it if it IS KC. They really sound like they're going to die!

The coughing can be God Awful. I've had dogs that coughed so hard they vomited. Bob got kennel cough and only had the green snots and did a lot of what sounded like throat clearing and an increase in what sounded like reverse sneezing. But it was kennel cough. One of my fosters got the green snots and no cough as well.
Almost every shelter dog I've ever had or fostered got kennel cough after being vaccinated at the shelter.
Re: Could my pug have a cold?
vets push the kennel cough vaccine, breeders do not so we did not get it...what are opinions on that???
