Oregon Wants ‘Dog Friendly’ to Be Less So
I was interested by this.. (a) that such a "district" exists (how lovely, actually), but.. (B) that there seems to be some confusion here about service dog definition..
if you can last as far down as the reference to "foo foo"...
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/03/us/03dogs.html?_r=2&emc=tnt&tntemail1=y
(c) I am amazed at the "grey area" - just because a business is limited on
the questions it can ask about a dog being "Service" or not does not
mean the people - who KNOW if a dog(/animal) is or is not - should try to get away
with access!!
any thoughts?

I love my dogs, but I do not think they should be in any store that sells food. I think the service dog thing is easy. Real service dogs are obviously so and there would be no mistake that my dogs are NOT service dogs and Odin is very well trained on a leash, but just too friendly and dopey to be a service dog.

This topic is of growing concern, even down here in boonieville southern Oregon.
(I once had some one say "I didn't think people actually lived there!")
Our local Growers Market has banned dogs, pooping, and fighting were the two main reasons. It became the place to socialize your dog (I used to bring Lucy, but her only). One morning two dogs went at it and one ended up losing an eye. In front of hundreds of people!
People love their dogs, we all understand that, but I think it diminishes the wonderful things that service dogs do, when anyone can do whatever!
The Pearl district is awesome, we love to visit up there! Dogs really are everywhere though. Frankly a foo foo dog in a purse causes much less grief then a big one walking down the aisle!

To me this is a case of a few people making poor decisions that ruins it for everyone.
I do not take Co-Pilot into places that sell or serve food unless a place is specified as dog friendly on the patio or something. I would not DREAM of taking her in a grocery store.

What Sara said. I was very disappointed in Boulder County, Colorado. Penny and I tried to eat on the patio (well, me eat, Penny have a bowl of water) of several restaurants in Boulder, Longmont, and Nederland (!) and were told that the county health department forbids dogs on restaurant patios. I thought about raising the point that Penny is not a dog, she's a pug, but decided not to split hairs. Everywhere else, and I'm talking about 10 states, there was no problem at all. Everywhere else, the waitperson knocked him/herself out getting Penny a bowl of water and making a fuss over her. To have Boulder, which is 20 square miles surrounded by reality, be dog unfriendly was a real shock.
