Zoe lost a toof!

Post  Mel on 9/18/2009, 12:43 pm

not sure if I posted this earlier, but a few weeks ago I found a tooth on the floor. She wasn't eating normally for a bit, so I assumed it was the missing tooth. she seems to be fine now, but she's had really bad breath for a bit. our vet had a free dental exam last Feb and said she'd need a dental next year. well, last night I was reading on dog and dental issues and I'm afraid the lost tooth might not be a normal thing for a 5yr old dog. Do you think she might have dental issues? I'm scared for her to have a dental, but if she needs it I will do it. Plus, she loves giving out kissies and it kills me that her breath is so bad!

Kimchi had dragon breath when we got her. She had her dental last week and they pulled 4 teeth (one was broken). Her dragon breath is all gone! I'll be doing anesthesia free dentals on the kids on an annual basis from now on, but when it is really bad, they need to have the full dental. It sounds like Zoe might be needing that at the moment.

Also, I've been adding Pet Naturals Oral Health to their food, which helps to keep the plaque at a minimum.

Penny's breath before her dental this spring was enough to knock a buzzard off a dump truck. Eleven pulled teeth later, she is very kissable. She was also a whole lot bouncier after her dental, and the dogtor dentist said that she had to have been in pain. I'd go with a dental now.

I'd get her in for her dental too, or at least have him take a look bc of the missing teeth. Hooli was the same way, Nancy-I feel bad for putting it off now, since he really has been so much "peppier" after the dental. I could finally tell it needed to be done because he was eating slower. Indy is next, ugh!

I'd get her in, it sounds like she's due. We just had a foster Dexter's done yesterday, he lost "14" , he's 9 years old and had never had one done. Man did he have gater breath, would gag a maget!!

I get to visit with him tommorrow so I know his breath will be much better!!

well, he's off the next few days, and I'll be out of town all next week, so I made an appt for Zoe on the 28th. she's been weird about eating and not gobbling up treats right away. that must be it. I hope she's not in pain! :(

I'd have her in for a dental, too. I know how you feel, and held off on Otto's (thinking brushing and wiping his teeth with gauze would do the job). When he had his dental, 11 teeth had to be removed (one had been broken at some point, don't know what - maybe when he was gnawing on a rock as he used to do). Afterwards, his breath was MUCH better.

I don't like having them done often because of anesthesia concerns, but I will do it every other year or so, more often if I see/smell a possible problem.

Hope all goes well for Zoe!

After you have a thorough vet dental, I would highly recommend doing an anesthesia-free dental every 6 months to a year. We do them once a month at the store and most "better" pet stores sponsor this type of thing.
