False Pregnancy??

Post  Brenda on 9/21/2009, 2:17 pm

Anyone ever gone thru this? I am now fostering Blossom who has had a ton of problems, but mostly her skin. You can see before and after pictures here:

She's had on and off swollen teats. I took her to the vet on my side of town for an opinion on them and she squeezed them and liquid came out! She said she may be going thru a false pregnancy. She was spayed two weeks prior!

Can they go thru a false pregnancy after being spayed? She was in heat at one point before being spayed (we've had her for months).

And, the swelling in her teats moves around from teat to teat. I have even been trying to squeeze them to see if I can get it out and she doesn't like it to well. Who would?? :)

This dog has just been such an anomaly with so many different issues, I just feel like we're missing something. We took her to the specialty clinic at one point and they even took some of the "fluid" off from that area and said it was nothing.

Oh, and when I was squeezing them, it would go from milky, to clear, to bloody???

I spoke to my vet again who said I could try a warm compress; which I have tried and it doesn't seem to help. She said maybe antibiotics would dry her up. I just don't get it.

Any ideas?

Bloody nipple discharge in a human is not a good thing, I can't imagine that it would be good in a pug. I agree, it seems like something is being missed. Maybe the antibiotics will clear it up, and warm compresses would help if it is a mastitis.

Don't squeeze them, just let them be. This is a totally normal reaction after a spay. It will go away in 3-4 weeks. If you find that they are getting bigger, take her off her food for 24 hours and do warm compresses. Again this is pretty normal, just that most of us don't squeeze teats after spays, unless they are swollen, but most teats leak some sort of substance after a spay.

it's normal after a spay? But, they are swollen. Well, not all of them, the lower 4 are.

It is ok. Just think if the chemical changes that go on from being spayed. They will be fine. I have had 2 that did this and both of them had NEVER been bred, nor were they anywhere near a heat cycle (Scarlett & Tabby). Emma also had it but she was spayed after her first litter so again to be expected. Just watch it and if you dont like what you see, take her off everything but water and put her on your lap, belly up and use a heat pad (on LOW). Her body will absorb it.
