Any clue what this is?

Post  MackandMattiesMom on 11/4/2009, 9:08 pm

Sue-Shi just broke out with this today. No idea if it's just a rash of some sort or what it might be? She's not scratching at it. It's just white bumps. She did get into the dusty laundry room today when Dennis was putting the washer and dryer back in there from our failed move. I just gave her a bit of Benadryl to see if that helps clear it up. Since we got a week's worth of pay stolen, I really don't have the money to get her to the vet this week. I know it's not the best picture, but it's the best I could get. Any suggestions?

She was wiggling all over. They're hard bumps. Could it be demodectic mange? It just appeared though so I'm thinking mange would show up over time? I've never seen mange in person and from what I can find online, it's more red appearing.

Hmmm. I suppose it could be mange--it's in the right spot, but it usually doesn't just "show up" like that. I'd guess an allergic reaction--has she lost any hair?

No idea honestly. To pop up that fast though, I'd guess it's a reaction to something she got near or rubbed up against. Is her hair naturally thin (Nell's always was as a puppy) or has she lost some hair on her head too?

She hasn't lost any hair. We just gave her the Benadryl because I just noticed it, so it hasn't kicked in yet. Her hair has always been a bit thin there. If it's localized mange, what is the treatment? Anything I can do until I can get her to the vet next week?

If it's just a localized case of demo, she may well outgrow it. You could try doing some gentle immune boosting--add some extra EFAs/Omegas.

Thanks! What exactly would I need to look for and how much do I give her? I'm a newbie with the vitamins and supplements. Mack and Mattie have always been healthy so you would know Sue-Shi would start off with a bang.

I personally like Wild Salmon oil and I'd start with just a quarter of a teaspoon for a couple of days until you're sure she won't get the squirts, then up to a half teaspoon. And I'd leave it there for at least a week.

Thanks, Blanche. I really appreciate your help. I'll go get some in the morning. I think I'll be gray by the time she's a year old. She's getting into everything now and making me crazier. Now I remember why I said no more puppies after Mack! She's totally worth it when she's sleepy and sweet though. Laughing

If its not some mange it might be a reaction....do you know if she touched anything in the laundry?

LuLu smashes her face into everything when shes happy, somehow fresh dryer towels get her excited, and was rubbing her face and got some clothing stain remover on her ear and forehead and it got bumpy so washed her off and gave her allergy meds and some baking soda and aloe on her skin.

I know that there was dust and lint behind the dryer that I didn't get a chance to clean up before she got in there. She's into everything right now so I don't know if it's a reaction or what.

Blanche, do you get the capsules of salmon oil or do you suggest the Best Pet Health Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil? I wasn't sure if there was a difference.

Kind of resembles Sophie when she blows up-it's some sort of allergic reaction, we just don't know to what. Did the benedryl seem to help?

Not that I can tell, other than knocking her out. I thought it resembled Sophie's issue when I noticed it too. These black divas just have to be difficult!

That's for sure! We struggled with Nell for a long time when she was a puppy. Well, we still do here and there but as a puppy she always had some kind of skin issue, hair loss, etc. As soon as we thought we had it figured out, she'd change it up. She's now 8 and we still have periodic issues, they're just not as bad thankfully.

Well, it's Sue-Shi's first dose ever so I'm sure it won't affect her over time. It doesn't knock Mack or Mattie out anymore either.

I'd vote for allergies. It is the sudden appearance after being somewhere with god-knows-how-old-dust that makes me think that.
