Gabapentin

Post  dieselsmom on 11/14/2009, 10:07 am

Makayla is currently on a combination of Gabapentin (pain med) and Derramaxx. This is the first time I've ever had to use Gabapentin on one of the pugs. Needless to say, it stinks something awful and Kayla HATES it! It takes us several minutes to get it all in her and she coughs and gags and spits and sputters the entire time. Then looks at me like I'm the meanest mom in the world for giving it to her.

Grace, on the other hand, says it's not so bad!!! Go figure - the poop eater doesn't mind the taste of nasty medicine! She is always curious to see what Kayla's getting, so I let her lick the end of the syringe with the Gabapentin in it. And everytime, she'll come back for more!! Little nutjob - the years of poop must have burned off her tastebuds!

Poor girl! Do they only make it in liquid? Could you get a compounding pharmacy to add flavor to it, like they do for kids?

That is an excellent idea. A compounding pharmacy could put cheese flavor in it, which might make it easier.

Isn't there a pain med they can give in pill form? I hate the liquid meds. Even Pugsly who would eat anything would spit out liquid meds.

She finished her Gabapentin this morning and was over the moon with happiness about not having to take it again. If she's put back on it, I will definitely check into having some flavoring added to it. Or see if there's a similar pain med that they can give her in pill form.

MJ, she had a tough weekend - her back end is weaker than it was when she came home last Tuesday. She's falling down more - not having spasms that knock her over, but just falling. We're just doing the best we can to keep her quiet until I drop her off tomorrow morning and we're really anxious to get the MRI results on Wednesday.
