Maleseb alternatives?

Post  smoochieface on 3/10/2010, 1:10 pm

Has anyone been able to order Maleseb pledgelets for our little stinkers' noses? I can't find any and we're almost done with our last jar. It's the only thing that manages to keep Bruno's noseroll from getting all funky and infected.

If not, does anyone use something else similar that helps control noseroll funk?

These two products are medicinal alternatives:

A mix of diluted vinegar and tea tree oil might do the trick as well.

Hey, I might try that and see how it works. Are you talking distilled white vinegar? Like diluted with 50% water and how much tea tree oil?

Go easy on the Tea Tree Oil, I learned; I use a solution for their ears that has it (only 5 drops to a full cup of other liquid), but it can be toxic at high levels.

My vet recommends Stridex (the acne pads) for wrinkle cleaning (and he specializes in brachycephalic breeds). I use the ones in the tealish/blue/green jar--squeeze them out before using, as they have lots of liquid on them. They seem to do the trick, but we've never *knock wood* had a problem with infections there. I've just jinxed myself, I'm sure, since we've had practically every other pug problem!

I use the Blue Power solution that is used for cleaning ears--works well on nose roll funk as well

Yeah, a 50% dilution of vinegar with a few drops of tea tree oil is the right mix.

I've used Tea Tree Oil on myself and it burns my skin, just an FYI. My vet gave me some pads that "replaced" the Malesab pads. When I get home, I'll get the name of them and let you know.

Zymox makes a product for infected yeast and/or bacteria in skin folds. They also make a great product for ears. Entirely pets carries it. Quite resonably priced. Lots of people on my diabetic site use it and swear by it. I have some on order, but haven't received it yet.

We recently tried the Zymox Otic. It's not so much a cleanser, but more of a treatment (in lieu of traditional meds like Otomax). Bud and Buster both suffer from chronic ear issues and we've tried everything else under the sun. This stuff really helped.

As promised, the name of the pads are "Mal-A-Ket". Hope this helps!

Thanks so much, everyone. Now, I have a bunch of options to play with. Bruno's stinky nose roll thanks you, too!

Thanks from us, too. We're down to almost of bottom of our last jar of Malaseb. I know I can easily get Stridex, I'll have to look around for the Mal-a-ket.
