Irony...and Rescue UPDATE

Post  TxAllieGrl on 5/14/2010, 12:48 pm

After our trip to Best Friends, I knew I had to "do something" and get back involved with rescue. So I filled out the volunteer app for DFWPR, offering to transport and do home checks (we can't foster...).

While I haven't been contacted by rescue (yet)... I did get a call from Fort Worth Animal Control. Apparently they have a dog there that is microchipped to me.

2 or 3 years ago I went with the rescue to help them get a pug out of jail. FWAC used a lottery system if multiple people wanted the pug, and the rescue wanted to stack the deck and be sure one of their people got it. and I did..and immediately turned it over to rescue.

We think that's the dog that's they have now (I can't think of any other dogs in this area that would be microchipped to me, and my herd is safely tucked in here at the house). So I will work with rescue to make sure we get it out of there (again).

If that isn't a sign that I need to be involved in rescue..I don't know what is.

Yep--the Dog Gods have sent you the canine equivalent of a burning bush. Go forth and rescue.

Allie, Allie, Allie...rescue always pulls you back in! And yes, BF is a good place to recharge, I needed it too.

By the way, I told Val this-I am figuring out the Best Friends network and how to sign up for volunteer stuff on there. I found a couple of very cool writing ones that i want to try.

Well, that is a good sign for sure, but how sad that poor pug is back in animal control. When are you going to pick him up?

Rescue is hoping they can get their inside contact at the shelter to release it directly to them. Otherwise, I'd need a ride to the shelter (I don't have a car today), or would have to wait until tomorrow morning when I can go up there.

I think Al Pacino said it best "Just when I thought I was out, THEY PULL ME BACK IN!" The universe has spoken, Allie, head it's demands!

And hope that little guy is okay.....

that is definitely a sign that you need to be back in it. That is so wonderful that you are a involved in it and that you had an insightful time at BF.

Good news and bad news...

it's a boxer that they have, and it's microchipped to someone with my name. The shelter found my contact info through the city's records, and was hoping it was mine.

so the good news it isn't a pug. and that the shelter is trying to use all resources available to get the dog back to it's owners.
oh, and I talked with rescue about volunteering, and now I'm on the list.

the bad news is there's still a dog out there that is homeless that I really can't help. (sigh - I know you can't save them all).

There was a recent article about the FW shelter's efforts and recent success in adopting out every healthy/adoptable dog, by using PetSmart's grant money (also a free spay/neuter program) so there is progress being made. Now, we can still debate about what's "healthy and adoptable", but it's a step in the right direction.

That is good news and bad news. You are right, you can't save them all, nevertheless, this was a clear sign from the universe that you should get re-involved.
