Grade 2 w/ clean margins is good right?

Post  smoochieface on 6/28/2010, 3:31 pm

Chester has joined the MCT club. The biopsy report is back and it turns out that the little bump on his belly that the vet thought was a benign hemangioma was actually a small MCT. He said grade 2 and they got clean margins. And it's not an aggressive form of MCT. So we just need to do a lot of body checks with Chester and keep an eye out for any more bumps. That's pretty much it in your experience, right?

A good reminder to get any little bump checked out. Chester's really looked like an extra little inflamed nipple. Even the vet didn't think it was anything when he first saw it.

Yes. My vet told me that there can be grade 2 low and grade 2 high (and he said the low was less aggressive). Emmet had a grade 2 low on one of his front legs. It took 2 surgeries to get clean margins, b/c it wasn't in a spot where it's easy to take extra tissue.

He's had several needle biopsies since, and they've just shown fatty tissue. *knock wood*

Sending good wishes that Chester forms no more lumps!

So I've done some research and asked around a bit. I am going to put Chester on a program of benadryl twice a day plus Bertes Immune Blend. Anyone else doing something similar?

Kendie, my vet had me place Pugsly on benadryl after his mast cell tumor surgery. Both he and Taz who was his littermate had several mct's over a period of time. Each time after surgery, several more would pop out then disappear within a few days. All of ours were always clean margins, but they had multiple ones so that put them at a higher risk of them coming back.

It is great that the doctor was able to get clean margins. Pugsly's mct's were misdiagnosed for over 3 years. His would grow, rupture, disappear then come back. It wasn't until I had taken him to the University of Wisconsin in Madison that the doctor suggested it could be mast cell tumors.

Yes, that's the news you want to hear - clean margins! Preferably grade 1, but grade 2 with clean margins is good too.

Leslie, we got lucky. Chester needed a dental so the vet recommended removing the bump on his belly at the same time. No one thought that it would be an MCT. The vet suggested that we have the bump biopsied "just in case" so we went ahead with it. I was a little bitter last Friday because the vet's $700 estimate ballooned into $1,200 by the end of the day (the itemized statement was 2 pages long!). Now, I'm so glad we spent the money for all the extra testing.

Karl and I will be going over Chester with a magnifying glass tonight.

Nelson my MCT chappy was doing the benedryl for a long time .(the benedryl gave him red eye stains so we stopped) He also donated some of his blood for MCT research. We do a grain free diet plus coconut oil , veggies or pumpkin a good probiotic and just started them all on kelp.
Huge hugs to Chester and prayers that no more come up.

I'm so glad they took it out and had it tested! I guess it is better safe than sorry with these guys. I am not familiar with the benedryl suggestion. It is supposed to act as a prevention program? Is it I haven't had to deal with MTCs with my 2 yet.

Clean margins is a wonderful thing. And Benadryl is an antihistamine that works by being a mast cell inhibitor. Penny is on one a day, too, but, of course, I call it Pennydryl.
