My new foster Elmer!
This is the first time I have fosterd a male and now I know why, he has been marking everything like mad.
I do have a belly band on him but it's not slowing him down one bit.
Vivian my sensitive girl is not happy at all, Rupert is pretty ok with it.

He looks like Maryjo's Walter in this one, I actually called him Walter tonight.

He stayed like that for about 2 min then it was up and pacing back and forth.
I am a bit concerned about him though, he has not stopped panting since he got here this afternoon, I have him in the only room with the air so I know it's not the heat, he also has not stopped pacing, I assume it's the newness of it all.
Tomorrow will give me a better feel for it.

Re: My new foster Elmer!
He should begin to settle down after the first day. I fostered several who panted and paced the first day, and then the second day they were much better. I would keep an eye on him too as far as the marking goes and correct him each time he tries it.

What a cutie pie! The panting will ease, it is the nerves and stimulation. We had one come in rescue, Cledus (renamed Toby) that was panting bad for the first day he was in rescue.
And, yes, the marking. What fun!
Been there and done that!

He's super cute! Yes, the marking is so much fun.
The puggy we just got in from UT spent all day yesterday panting and pacing, but he is settling into the foster home today!
Re: My new foster Elmer!
Bless his heart! I am sure he'll settle down soon enough.

Thanks for the re-enforcement. I really hope he is able to settle down, it's unnerving having him pant and pace so much.
I have corrected him every time he goes to mark and he will stop, the only problem is I'll be without a voice by the time hes done!

I am sure it is just the newness of everything. You can try Rescue Remedy to help calm him too. Marking is no fun! Belly bands are such a good invention.

Re: My new foster Elmer!
The belly bands are leaking so I am going to try diapers, does anyone know if they will work for a male?
I've only had him overnight and I am already really stressed. Viv is besides herself and he won't stop panting, pacing and marking.
I'ts going to be a loooooog week.

Diapers will not work on a male. Does not cover his pee pee. Are you putting a feminine pad in the belly band? That helps a lot with not soaking through.

yes but he still has some leakage, I keep adjusting the band but maybe it's not big enough.

Bigger pad? It should improve the longer he is there. Even my worst markers have gotten better after a couple days. It is exhausting.

I'm heading to Petsmart right now. Thanks for giving me hope, I have not had to deal with this yet and I have a huge headache to boot!

Awww, what a cutie! I hope that he's settling down for you. One thing that I've always liked better about male fosters is that it's easier for me to catch them marking because they lift their legs. The girls are usually sneakier!

Re: My new foster Elmer!
Donna, it gets better, like Marci said, even the worst marker will calm down (ahem, Indy).
The first few days are usually a contest to see how many surfaces they can mark on. The belly bands will help-I am going to make a plug for DeeAnn's belly bands, they have worked the best of the ones I have tried, they are wide too so it covers everything.
The other thing is, when it's really bad, make sure if you aren't able to keep an eye on him to keep him either confined to an area or even tethered to you so he can't sneak off and pee. It's a lot of work but it does seem to help.

I have him with me at work so I can keep an eye on him, it's nice to know he should relax a bit, it is very stressful.
I will order some of DeeAnn's bands, the one I have on him now is probaly not wide enough.

I'd also query a UTI. I've had several (actually, lots) that seemed like markers, but were suffering from a UTI. I always like to eliminate the medical first before I assume it's behavioural.

How would I know if he had a UTI, he has been peeing a LOT, but then today he peed a bit of blood.
Do you think the vet would give me something even if I did not bring him in, I'm leaving for vacation Friday morning and another foster mom is picking him up tomorrow night so tomorrow is the only time I can get something.
He is not the brightest bulb in the pack but he is darn cute and lovable.
