'Bout time they had an article on this preventable tragedy...
An article about the 'flat-face' breeds and dying on airplanes:

Thanks MJ. It makes me cringe when people act as if traveling in cargo is a safe option for pets. Not to mention the waiting on the hot runway-all sorts of recipes for disasters for pugs.
Re: 'Bout time they had an article on this preventable tragedy...
Yep. There are so many things that could go wrong. It just scares me to death.
Re: 'Bout time they had an article on this preventable tragedy...
It's about time a "legitimate" publication came out and said what we've always known. Had to share that article on FB to reach my more under-educated friends.

It's something that is so clear to caring, responsible owners of brachy breeds and an unspoken tragedy with the authorities. About time it is brought out in the open.

People buy a lot of the crap about it being climate controlled and all that, I have heard that argument used quite often but the climate control, if you can even call it that, is primitive at best. I found this from a pet travel site too:
When traveling in the cargo hold, pets can be subjected to temperature extremes which may include excessive heat or freezing. For this reason, many airlines do not permit pets in the cargo hold during the summer when travelers try flying with pets, as pets have been known to die in the intense heat of the closed hold while planes wait to taxi down the runway. In a cargo hold with imperfect climate control, the hold can also reaching freezing temperatures very quickly once the aircraft is in flight, which could be fatal for your pet. It is also possible for the cargo hold to lose pressure, and some cargo holds have imperfect air circulation systems, meaning that your animal has a chance of suffocating from lack of oxygen.

How very sad for "6-year old pug Pixie." I can't even fathom having any of my pets put into the cargo hold (even the long-noses). Never ever ever.

Since Penny is too tall to fit under an airplane seat, that is why we drive everywhere we go. So very sad.

You're a good mama to Miss Penny Lane. How's she doing these days?

Re: 'Bout time they had an article on this preventable tragedy...
I would never put a dog of any breed in cargo. When Sarina & I were flying back from PR, there were 3 Boxers in the cabin with us. The people had the Boxers as certified guide dogs. Now whether they were really or not, I don't care, I gave them kudos for not flying their dogs cargo. The dogs just lay in the floor space where you would normally put your feet. I guess that you'd have to have pretty understanding people in the isle with you. There was a lady with a toy Poodle in the cabin also, but she had 2 standard Poodles in cargo. When we got diverted to Miami and had to spend the night in the airport, they told the lady that they'd keep the Poodles in the cargo area, but let them out to potty and eat. The lady said hell no, you take me to get my dogs. It ended up the plane took off back to Tampa without us. I can't image what they would have done with the dogs if she had not had them with her. Fly them back? Leave them on the tarmack?

Thanks, MJ. She still has arthritis in her elbows and hips, and the pain meds help a lot, plus the lavender oil. Her PK hasn't progressed, and she is as spunky as ever. Heaven help me if her dinner isn't ready by 6pm sharp - I get what for in a most serious manner. Her gotchabirthday is Aug 2, and we're thinking she'll be 13. She really doesn't act it, though.

That's right - I think it was a winner in breed, too. Just absurd.
