Makayla is doing fabulous!
Makayla has been getting pain pills three times a day for about the past month now - maybe a touch longer than that. And it's amzing the difference that has made in her. Her DM is not painful, it's not her back end that's in pain, it's her front end that's painful from carrying all that extra weight around since her back end is so much weaker. My wonderful dad comes out three days a week to give her a mid-day pill (since Josh is out of town), which is such a huge help for me.
She's also changed the way she walks, which I believe is her way of adjusting to he weak back end - she kind of swings her back legs out to the side and forward to help her walk. It helps her to not fall as much, which is good.
But here's the kicker - this week she walked up the step on our patio three separate times. The first time I had to kind of shake my head and tell myself I didn't see what I thought I had seen! She was walking in from outside and as long as she kept her momentum going, she just walked right up that step. But if she didn't keep the momentum going, she wasn't able to go up the step. Keep in mind, Makayla hasn't walked up a step since like October. So I was thrilled to see that, but thought it was time for a checkup nonetheless.
Kayla had a checkup yesterday, the vet was concerned with the way she's walking. He thought her knees were giving her problems, but he checked her knees and said they are great. He said, and I quote, "she's doing fabulous - keep doing whatever you're doing with her." Now, I know she's not "getting better" but it seems she's pretty stabilized right now and not continuing to decline (which she did so much over the past 8 months) which is just awesome. We never know how long each stable phase will last so we've learned to enjoy them however long or short they are.
And, on a side note, after bringing in some cupcakes and laughing with the vet for 10 minutes while talking about "The Office" we of course weren't charged for our visit - that's why we love our vet!
