DFWPRC: Incoming!

Post  TxAllieGrl on 8/6/2010, 10:56 pm

So we picked up 10 pugs from a "breeder" today who was being shut down in east Texas.

7 females, 3 males. Our vets are overwhelmed, so we're having to cycle them through quickly, and they'll go back for spay/neuter as our vets have room for them.

We're still recovering from the 14 that came in from OK, plus the 4 we got that same day about 3 weeks ago.

I'm now assisting the foster coordinator - helping with the heartguard reminders for all of the fosters each month, vet recheck reminders and checking vet references for new foster homes until I get used to the system/procedures and can take on more. And used to the volume...120 to 130 pugs, 60+ foster homes - sheesh!

Seriously..it takes an army to keep this thing moving.

Wow, Allie, I'm impressed. Sounds like a day in the life of the Nevada Humane Society, too. I'm learning to take each day as it comes, and concentrate on the Good Things.

Bless you Allie! There is always so much to do...and so few people! I wish I could help!

I hope all those puggies are okay, without major medical issues.

Wow indeed. Across the pond here it's difficult for us to imagine so many coming in all at once; I think it's something that's only happened on very few occasions in the past.
Thank you Allie and DFW for all your hard work.

There must be something in the air, Green Mountain has ten more coming in this weekend and every foster home is full.
Good Luck Allie.

I've always been amazed at the sheer volume that larger rescues like DFW are able to handle. We barely keep our heads above water and I don't think we deal with half as many pugs per year as they do. Ya'll do an extraordinary job there Allie! The amount of coordination & work that it takes is really something.

thanks Jana!!!

They've indicated that our vet bills this year are going to be in the $200K plus range. We're forming a marketing/fundraising committee to do a better job budgeting and planning revenue generation.

I'm working on the spreadsheet of all of our dogs in foster care - the number of them that are HW+ is just heart wrenching.

With you getting more involved Allie maybe you and I can talk and we can get ideas back and forth for our rescues.

It's so bad everywhere. AL took in 10 this week too, we couldn't help as we're full and they're still coming in too. We are getting an older gal from north AL who was dumped in the shelter's drop off bin. I still can't believe they still have those things!

Brenda - sure, would be happy to share what I'm learning if it'll benefit you guys.

It's really bad everywhere. So many owner surrenders - lost jobs, lost homes, etc. And so many coming from big breeders, and still the ones coming from shelters.

Hey Allie,

I'm going to send out a second plea for the puggers. Do you want me to ask for fosterhomes as well? If so,do you want fosters only in TX or also in LA incase a pug needs to stay a few days until getting to TX? The other thing is I had a couple people that would feel more comfortable calling in to DFW's vet with a credit card. Is your vet okay with this and is Tim ? If he/she is could you give me the information to the vet as well. The only thing that bothers me about putting vet information on a plea is that sometimes you get whackos that call the vet and demand to know what the dog is being treated for what their status is etc. I feel unless you're part of the rescue,a fosterhome or a waiting adoptive family,it's none of their business.

Thanks,
Trish

Trish - my guess is they really want all donations to go through either the website or via check. We are working with 3 vets, and it'd be much more difficult to keep track of donations if they paid one of the vets.

We ALWAYS need foster homes!

and we had 4 adoptions today - YAY!

Holy Cow, Allie--that's a lot of pugs. Good for you for helping out. This is the worst summer I've ever seen for dog dumping. We aren't anywhere near as big or as jammed as you guys and our vet bills are at the 50,000+ per year. I can easily understand how DFWs get to the 200 mark.

aww thanks Tarrington. It's all of our foster homes that are the real heros!

I'm just doing computer work for them, trying to support it the best way I can.

It's come so far in the last few years - I'm so amazed.
