Grrrr!
The shelter had a pug in bad shape, they said either bad back injury, or hip, or something. So they transported him to our vet Friday-but he came in a few days before. The poor guy has been in HUGE amounts of pain for god knows how long. Our vet said he has really bad hd, not sure if it was from trauma or what (he is young) but it could have been rather easily fixed but obviously idiot owners let him suffer. Then he had to suffer some more for the "standard" hold time to be up before we could get him. We can't even do the surgery yet because he's on a pain IV drip so we can get him stabilized, and he is still running a fever.
Re: Grrrr!

sometimes I wish the people who let animals suffer in pain could switch with them for just a minute to see what it's like.

I don't understand how they could let him suffer!! Why can't they take him to a vet while still be under "hold" status?!?!?! And who even knows how long the "people" who surrendered him let him suffer before bringing him in. People are awful.

Re: Grrrr!
What is wrong with some people?? Usually shelters try their darndest to get injured dogs to a rescue. (If they don't just put them to sleep immediately).
I just don't get it.

Do you think that is just our shelter? Seems I hear about a lot of shelters in the states that don't care.

Yeah just working with rescue is a really recent thing with this one!
Re: Grrrr!
It reminds me of that sweet little black puggie that we got in at the Humane Society a while back that I posted for good thoughts. I say this every day - I don't understand how a human being can allow a sentient being to be in pain and not do anything!!!!! I'll say a prayer for your poor little mite tonight, Saira.

Re: Grrrr!
It totally depends on the shelters. The ones that are county or state run most times aren't allowed to do anything to the dogs and cats in their care for vet work! It drives me insane. My own Dewey was found hit by a car beside the road, but he had to stay at the vet's office for 7 days until we could rescue him to see if an owner would claim him. (this was how he came into rescue, not when I owned him) He had a shattered pelvis and hip. He was actually lucky that they let him stay at the vet's office and gave him pain meds, most shelters don't even do that. Part of their mentality is, that the dog or cat is probably going to be put down anyway, why spend the county/state money on them and try to help them? I know a lot of these shelters are stuck so to speak, but there needs to be change!
Do you guys know there are still shelters with overnight drop boxes and gas chambers? Oh I could go on and on. Just this year - yes 2010 - we outlawed gas chambers. I have no idea how long the shelters have to comply though. We just got in a really sick pug from a drop box in rural AL and she's fighting for her life right now.

I wish we could do something, Brenda. I think it's crazy that if an owner doesn't get help, they could be charged with cruelty in some cases (well, where there are actual laws) but a shelter doesn't even have to give pain pills. The drop boxes are horrifying!
The good news is, I think he is stable enough for surgery maybe tomorrow. I should know more tomorrow too, hopefully this weekend I can get pics.

how horrible. i hope the poor little guy is okay.

Re: Grrrr!
The shelter situation is a real problem - one problem being they are state or government run, and ruled by beaurocracy. Pisses me the hell off! This stems from the mentality that dogs (and cats) are property, and expendable.
Up here, out in the rural parts of Alaska, dogs get shot by the "shelters". Polar Pug Rescue has a contact in one of the villages that trys to send us any dogs they can to save them from being shot.
Also, dogs are treated horribly in the villages anyways. Rarely ever are they true companions. My husband visits a lot of villages when he works out of town, and the stuff he has told me makes me sick. Truly heartbreaking.

Re: Grrrr!
BLOODY HELL! So glad he's getting the right care now.
And that's the irony - if owners were found to wait this long in getting vet care for a dog in pain, they would be charged with animal cruelty.
