Gracie popped her knee out of place

Post  GracieNEmma on 8/26/2010, 9:24 am

The title says it all. We were walking her and whenever she's done going potty, she kicks. She must have stepped wrong and it popped out of place. I literally almost passed out in someone's driveway! ashamed I can't handle stuff like that. Anyway, it popped back in but I still took her to the vet. She was sore of course so she was on meds for 10 days. My question for you all is this: For those that this has happened to, how long before they seemed better, like back to the way they were before it happened. I can tell it's better but not 100%. She still seems to favor it a little. She still doesn't do stuff that she used to before and it concerns me. She's back to using her stairs on to the bed and couch, which she wasn't doing when it happened but she used to jump on me to greet me at the door and she doesn't really do that or if she does, it's quick. Also, she hasn't been kicking after she goes potty. Hubby and I both think she is favoring it a little bit still. I know it's probably good that she doesn't kick or jump but it just worries me because she used to and doesn't now. Before I take her back to the vet, I wondered what anyone that has experienced this before, how long it took to recover.

ETA: I should add that it's been 2 weeks today that it popped out of place. Her last anti-inflammatory pill was this past Sat night.

The only time this ever happened to my pugs was with Ichiro. And, it was the first indication that he needed LP surgery. His knee started popping out, and two weeks later, he had the surgery.

Could be Grace has LP and needs the surgery. I'm surprised your vet didn't think that was the cause. I would take her in again.

No, she has the luxating patella, we've just never had issues with it. She's only a grade one and he said it's not bad enough that she needs surgery. It was more her stepping on it wrong. She stepped from a thick piece of grass to the gutter in the street that was angled (hard to explain). I know this was the cause of it, I just wondered how long it took for the "soreness" to feel better for her.

I guess my thought is....if it is grade 1, but her knee is popping out that easily, just from stepping to different terrain...maybe it is progressing to grade 2?

Did your vet feel for a torn ACL? When Bruno's knee popped out, it was a torn ACL, especially with the symptoms you are describing. Bruno continued to favor his knee, even on steroids, until we had the surgery.
