Gotta new pug to save!
Earlier in the week I seen an ad on kijiji - a young couple with a 3.5 year old bullmastiff and a 5 year old pug. They were looking for someone to take both. I sent her an email with my "rescue mantra" and followed up the next day to see how it was going. On Wednesday she asked if I would call her, so I did. She said that she has said "no" to at least 60 people that have called because she is willing to give the two away for free, if it is the right person. We talked for about an hour and we decided that she would take the bullmastiff to the vet for a checkup because she has been "peeing funny when she squats" and "shivers a lot." She assumed it was stress and a bladder infection. Then we would figure out what to do...because she picked ME!!!!
She called me back last night bawling!! She had to collect a urine sample on the bullmastiff and when she did, it was "pure blood." I asked her if she ever noticed that before and she said that she doesn't watch them pee when they are in the yard! Anyway, blood work was done and the bullmastiff checked over. They found her underbelly full of lumps. She is loaded with cancer! They had her put to sleep last evening. Her name was Sophie.
So this leaves Frank, the 5 year old pug. All his shots are up to date. He is neutered. She said that he loves to play and races through the woods at high speeds, breaking bushes as he goes! I shuddered when she said that because all I can think about is his poor eyes!
I PICK HIM UP TOMORROW MORNING AT 6:00 AM!!!!!
I have to be at my private practice tonight or else I would go tonight, but I will get up at some ungodly hour and make the drive for 6:00 a.m. They live about 2 hours from here, on the Fundy Coast. You know whats weird? Every dog that I "rescued" lives on the ocean! Even Rosco! He lived in fishing village! So did Piper! So did Deedam! Now Frank. Weird?
Maybe my pug rescue has to have a water theme?
Anyway....you wanna make a bet that I was outside last night with a flashlight, following Rosco and Juneau around to make sure that they peed yellow and not red?

Re: Gotta new pug to save!
Thank God you let Sophie's peeps know that they should be concerned about her peeing. It amazes me how many Pet parents are in in tune with body signals that there is something wrong.
I actually always look at poo and pee. Mine also pee on wee wee so even when I do not think it is clear enough, I make them drink a little more water.
I am wishing you well on picking up Frank. Sounds like these people do really care about what happens to their dogs. There may be tears.
Do not know your area first hand but names for companies, kids and pets are always from inspirations.

I will light a candle for Sophie. I'm so thankful you told them to check her urine and take her to the vet.
Safe travels getting Frank. He's a lucky pug!

Poor Sophie. It breaks my heart when dogs suffer, and the owner's aren't even aware of it. She must have been in pain for some time.
I don't always check my pugs pee and poo every time, but, I am hyper aware of their general health and well being.
And, one of my dearest fosters was named Frank. It's not exactly the most original name, but it fits quite a few pugs. I cannot wait to meet this one and see how he does with your crew.
As a side note....I'm not sure about tax law in Canada....but, if you are going to be putting your own money into this, and possibly money from "donors", you may want to consider getting a non-profit status. That way the money you put in is a true donation. Just a thought, since it seems things are picking up for you.
How about Ocean's Pug Rescue? Hmm, that is OPR....maybe too close to Oprah sounding? lol

So sad about Sophie, but I'm glad you're getting Frank. It sounds like his mom realy does want what's best for him. I vote for the simple, no-nonsense, no-confusion "New Brunswick Pug Rescue" as a name. If you design a logo, you may want to incorporate a water theme.

GO TARRINGTON!! Very sad about Sophie, but thank Dog you were there with advice and she wasn't given to someone without a clue. Are you going to keep Frank or find another home for him? Did you friends end up taking the other little one they'd fallen in love with?

That poor mastiff was only 3.5 yrs old? I am crying for her. She might have been in pain for a long time. I will light a candle for her tonight.
Good luck finding a home for the pug.

I was thinking the exact same thing. RIP Sophie
Good luck with Frank (that name became common here after the MIB movie). I hope he places himself as easily as Piper did, but don't count on it!
I also second the charity status if possible - look into the regulations at least.
Go, Tarrington! Hugs to you!

Maybe the water is calling to me for some reason. When I had my 4th child, we lived an hour from the hospital. We lived in a fishing village and we had to travel along the water to get to the hospital in Moncton, New Brunswick. I didn't make it to the hospital. Morgan was born in the car at the side of the road. We called him Morgan because we liked the name, but it was later that we found out it means "By the Sea" Cool huh?

I'm not sure if I will keep him. If I do, I will have to change his name. I had an ex named Frank and he was an asshole. I also call my boss Frank behind his back.
Yes, my friends took Piper and are TOTALLY in love!!! It is a good thing I go home for lunch every day because my coworkers are probably sick and tired of Piper stories! He gushes about her!!! Apparently they went home for Thanksgiving and she was a perfect angel and everyone wanted this perfect and well-behaved dog. Geez...must be nice!

Good luck finding a home for the pug.
Here is a picture of Sophie. The owner sent me a picture when I was considering taking both together. She is gorgeous! Looks like a big pug to me! Yes, she was only 3.5 years old. Isn't that sad??

Sophie was beautiful...so sad about her diagnosis. It's great you spoke with the owner, and she went to the vet. It probably saved Sophie from suffering more than she already did.
Best of luck with your puggy rescue! Can't wait to see pictures!

My name here, "We're Here", reflects the name of a sailing schooner. Perhaps your logo should have a ship, a pug and blue water---remember the mantra of a rescue, never let your tank go below half empty at night, and always take a thermos of soup.
