Okay, so my friend Erika is going to be in touch with Joanne. Her family has owned pugs since she was little and would love, love, love to have a pug but isn't sure she can give this pug the attention he deserves (she's a bartender for one and also is traveling a lot in the coming months). HOWEVER, she is going to consider fostering him for now just so he can have a safe place to stay until a better situation develops. Also, Erika and I are beating down the bushes around town to find someone who will take him forever. I feel very good about the possibilities. Erika plans on calling Joanne ASAP. Will let you know what develops.

Bless your friend Erika, and you! This pug does not deserve what's happening to him. At 13, he likely doesn't need a lot of attention - just a warm lap and someone that will cuddle him up until his time comes.

Its hard not to judge people that dump their pugs because of a move. Funny - we've had people adopt pugs from us that were moving and it was never a problem. Why can some people move with a pug, and others can't?

A little more info was discovered in a phone call to Winston's Mom ...
"I talked to Joanne. She is leaving the country under emergency circumstances. They have no money and no vehicle for transportation. She has had Winston since he was a puppy. He is neutered and housebroken and good with kids. he is healthy for a 13 year old, with the typical old man ailments: dental disease and arthritis. He is still visual and he hears well.

She needs a safe place for him. "

Out of country is a bit different than across state lines ... especially for a kid living with parents/family
Sounds like it is all going to work out :-)

Not that it's important, but I don't think she's a kid. She lists herself as a designer on her profile and talks about having researched what breed she wanted to get since 1995. If she is a kid, she's in her 20s.

Please understand this is a work in progress. I have nothing definitive yet. I got an email from Joanne thinking I was going to pick up Winston on Monday. I don't know yet if I can. I replied to her and now we're in touch. I think everything will be clear by tomorrow. I'm doing everything I can -- please have patience.

Elizabeth, we know you're doing what you can. No pressure from me. This is a tough gig to pull together--if you can.

It's probably best if people leave it to Joanne and Elizabeth to work out what they can, if they can.

The latest word is that we have a plan for Winston. Either he's going to be placed with a local Napa "pug" family or he'll be going to LA to stay with Lisa (6BeautifulPugs) until we find a permanent spot for him. Incidentally, we might have one as a friend of mine knows a couple near San Diego who lost a pug (to old age) not to long ago and has been looking to add another one to the family. At any rate, the plan is to either get him situated in Napa or I'll pick him up on Monday and take him down to LA with me. Once there, I plan on rendezvousing with Lisa and she's going to take it from there.

I've spoken with Joanne via email and we've arranged to meet on Monday -- short of us finding a home for him in Napa before then (still a 50-50 chance apparently). If I do have to drive him down to LA, I'd love some pointers from anyone who has transported a rescue before. What should I bring that I might not think of? Anything else I should know? I appreciate any advice or counsel y'all might offer.

A crate, obviously. But also have the owner send an unwashed T-shirt or other item that smells like home. Any favourite toys, some of his food. These are the things we usually ask an owner to send with the dog.

She'll need to sign some sort of document surrendering ownership--I know it sounds like nit picking paperwork, but she should sign something saying she's relinquishing the pug to you, Elizabeth.

Yes, there is. They are 10 hours away and have absolutely NO ROOM.

I'm sorry, but people don't seem to be understanding that if these rescues could help, they would. These are decent people who move heaven and earth to help pugs. They are at capacity and beyond.

It's not about it being inconvenient. It's about not having the capacity to fit in one more pug for any length of time. Some times we just CAN'T help because we have full foster homes that simply can't be asked to more and more and more. I know this is the case with SNPR and Rebecca is certainly saying that PugSavers is in the same boat.

Oops, I'm sorry, I thought the woman was in Nevada. Didn't realize she was 10 hours away.
I wasn't being judgemental in any way, just throwing out what I thought might be a helpful suggestion.

Glad something's in the works for him, anyway.

Re: Woman Needs Roxanne or Nv Rescue

Post  puglouie on 11/14/2010, 8:25 pm

GOOD NEWS! I found a home for Winston in wine country. A dear friend is taking him in and she lives in my town -- close enough where I can check in and make sure everything goes well. We're not sure she'll keep him forever but that's her intention. Right now we'll just see how it goes. You can thank Louie and Chamuco for this. She has fallen in love with them and has invited herself over for dinner more than once as a ruse to hang out with the pugs. She has made us put her first on the list to watch Louie and Chamuco when we're out of town. This morning, she woke up and said to herself, "I'm ready to get another dog." And this afternoon, my husband heard her say this and jumped right in with "Elizabeth has a pug that needs a home. Why don't you take him." Tomorrow Winston will be ferried by yours truly to his new home in beautiful downtown Healdsburg. No stairs, a nice Senior-pug-sized yard and plenty of aunts and uncles and pug friends to hang out with. I think it's really better than can be expected considering the time frame and the 11th-hour situation.

Joanne tells me Winston does have some medical issues. My friend is self-employed and while she has been successful in the past, she's struggling in this economy like everyone else. It would really ease the transition if we could raise a little bit of money for any vet bills Winston might need. My plan is to collect some funds and whatever isn't used on Winston, we will donate to Pug Savers in Sacramento. If you want to make a donation, you can do it through Paypal. Use my email address (emcosin (at) mac (dot) com) and please mark the payment "Winston".

Anyway, I'm picking Winston up tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. I'm bringing my camera so I can document the exchange and take some last photos of Joanne and her beloved pug and I'll get some with the new owner too. I'll post them as soon as I can. Thanks to everyone who helped or sent good vibes -- Lisa 6 Beautiful Pugs was ready and willing to take him and we had arranged to meet in LA on Tuesday. I'm sorry we're not going to meet but glad of the circumstances.

Just finished reading this saga from the beginning. It is just depressing to know that the pug rescues are all in such dire straights in the need for senior foster homes. I love the senior pugs and fostered them for several years. I was lucky that they all got adopted even with all of their senior pug problems. I fostered most of them for 6-10 months. Then I took in my Ty as a foster. He was thought to be 13 years old. Perhaps he was. That would make him 15 now. My vet thinks he was more likely 10 or 11 when I got Ty two years ago. I fell in love with Ty and it was mutual! I adopted him for my own on the condition from my husband that I no longer foster. I agreed, reluctantly.

I guess that was off the topic. Sorry.

I am very happy for Winston that he will have a good home. Bless everyone in rescues and other helplers for all they sacrifice for the sake of our beloved pugs. Cyber hugs.

YAY for Winston. I am so happy this worked out. Bless everyone involved.

Unfortunately, this just highlights the state of affairs in rescue. Many of them are overwhelmed and at their breaking point. I hope more people get involved and realize that rescues can't do everything on their own.
