Pugalug Pug Rescue closes it's doors

Post  northernwitch on 11/17/2010, 12:22 pm

I hate it when we have to do this. Hate it. I've closed intake. We are just broke. Too many expensive medical dogs, too few donations and we just can't afford to vet any more dogs beyond our current fosters.

It is the way of rescue, these days. More dogs, more expensive health issues and less money. Depressing.

Blanche, I know it's not a decision you make lightly. I hope things turn around soon. In the meantime, I hope owners can be more responsible and take better care of their pets (though we all know that won't happen).

It's a tough one to make. Thanks for all you've done to date Pugalug (and Blanche)!

Its a tough decision, but when you are up against a wall, no amount of pushing will make it stop.

I hope with the doors closing, you will have a chance to catch up with the medical needs of your current pugs, help some adoptions happen, and then be able to open the doors again.

We can't do eveything and help everyone. It is one pug at a time. I know you (and the other rescues) are doing everything they can. We can't do anymore than that.

The reality is that two of our last fosters to come in have cost us almost $12,000 in vet care. So that pretty much wiped out the coffers. One was an emergency case so the care couldn't be deferred.

Thanks for the donation, Adrianna. Every bit helps at this point.

So sorry! It is quite depressing, huh? Even after Pugfest we're about broke and will be starting from scratch again.

Yep. And our donations are WAY down. We participate in a Walk-A-Thon every summer. In 2009 it made up over 10,000--maybe as high as 12,000 (I can't remember the exact total). This year it garnered under $7,000. Still alot of money, but that's a dramatic drop and it's that kind of drop that really hurts over the long haul.

I'm so sorry to read this. It takes a strong person to make this type of decision. I admire and respect you( and the others involved with the rescue) Blanche for doing this.

Take care,
Trish

Better to close your intakes now so that you will hopefully survive to re-open them another day. And you have so many current fosters to that need continued care. That just sucks though, Blanche. I hope things pick up soon. But yes, very depressing.

You have made a tough decision, but you are keeping the commitment you made to your current fosters. Giving them the best care you can, not lowering care because the load is so big. I'm sorry Blanche.

Crying or Very sad I've very sorry - I know how tough it is. The cocker rescue I foster for has had to do the same this year. Luckily things started to pick up a little bit and we could open up our doors a little bit. And someone adopted one of the special needs dogs - which was a surprise to be honest.

It's so disheartening. People just can't give what they were giving last year, even. Hang in there... That old saying that I hate "You can't save them all" is, unfortunately, true.

Ugh, I am so sorry to hear this :(
It is a hard time for all rescues, unfortunately. The ferret rescue had to make the decision to close their doors earlier this year, too.

Too many animals in need, and with such poor economy, not enough donations.

I'm sorry. I'm sure it will turn round at some point, but you can only do what you can do. And that is a very good job.

Chin up.
