Question about eyes for my Mom-in-law

This is Olive...
She is 11 months old.
My mother-in-law would like to know if it is common for pugs eyes to become very bloodshot when they are tired. She says that Olive's eyes are very bloodshot every night.
Is it something to worry about?

In that photo her eyes are not bloodshot, but there is some pigment in the whites. I can't tell from the pic, but if any of that brown pigment has grown onto the coloured part of the eye, she will need treatment for PK (pigmentary keratitis). A vet can examine her and tell you whether or not she needs to see an eye specialist. This is extremely common in pugs but these days better medication is available for managing it.

If her eyes do get bloodshot frequently, a vet diagnosis would be needed. I can't imagine what that might be if they are bloodshot frequently but not all the time.

I would take her to an eye specialist. Tinker's eyes would often be bloodshot especially if he played harder they would turn very red. I finally took him to the specialist. They said that many times, bloodshot eyes are not a problem and can be treated with some steroid drops as needed. While there, they did a very thorough eye exam and found his retina is partially detached.

When it comes to the eyes, I prefer having a specialist check them because so many vets just think pugs breathe bad and have bad eyes when many times there is something that can be done to help them

It could be allergy related also. She might need benadryl and/or eye lubricant drops. But I would say to see a specialist even if it is to get a base line for the future. When we got Lola (she was a year and 1/2), she already had a scar on her eye. My regular vet said that it was fine and they did photograph her eyes to keep on file, but I did take her to the vet optho to get a base line for her. This way, if she has to see him in the future, they will know if the eyes have changed over the years.
