A Bug?

Post  juneau hunter on 12/1/2010, 8:11 pm

I was contacted by a woman this evening with "a bug" - a boston terrier/pug mix. She lives 2 hours from here and someone told her that I have a rescue. Geez, how does this get around so quickly and we don't even know any of the same people! I barely know my neighbours!

She is going to call me tomorrow to make sure her ex-boyfriend doesn't want her. Apparently they just broke up and she can't keep "Kiwi" anymore. She told me that Kiwi has had 2 litters of puppies! She had the father - a male pug, but gave him away already. Kiwi had 11 puppies in March!!!!! Eleven!!!!! She said 5 died. Then she had 9 puppies in September and 3 died. How friggin' sad is that!!!!!

So now I have questions. How common is a Bug? Any issues I need to know of?

We have had a few Bugs come through our rescue. We thought Mel's foster Princess was one. We've been lucky, they have all been good dogs, but...they do tend to be more hyper, at least that had been our experience. I know some rescues have seen some with aggression issues.

They are pretty common--a bit of a fad. Watch out for manic busy-ness and a lot will depend on whether the dog has more pug or boston characteristics. If more boston, then the dog may be very terrier like--busy, not always great with other dogs and some of them can be biters. Expect health problems. And if she's had that many puppies that close together, I'd expect her to be in not great shape--likely poor nutrition and may have bad teeth and potentially some bone/joint issues due to the pups sucking up all the calcium.

Would be worth seeing if there is a boston terrier rescue near you or her. They may be able to take her. She'll need some vet work, I imagine besides being spayed.

Tarrington:
Here's the link to the Boston Terrier Club of Canada who have a national rescue program. Would be worth contacting them. Once you start taking in mixes--not that you shouldn't--you can get easily overwhelmed. Worth checking out if the BTCC will help you out. I can't keep up with the need for pugs right now so I'm not taking any mixes except in an extreme emergency.

I'm catching up here, you must have found Turbo the perfect home? I can only imagine how hard it is to let him go.
This poor bug, if the Boston club can't take her I know she'll be in good hands with you.

YAY for Turbo! But, hugs to you. I know how hard it is to let them move on.

Good luck if you get the bug. Placing mixes can be hard sometimes.

Bugs, Jugs (JRT x pug) and a multitude of other pug Xs are pretty common here in the UK, due to the vastly increased popularity of the pug breed. Less than scrupulous breeders charge many £100 for these dogs which are, basically, mongrels (or crossbreeds if you prefer) and market them as "designer dogs". I could write a book on the subject, but won't do so on this particular occasion!

WOW! A hundred pounds is CHEAP! Pet stores here sell Bugs for $600-$1,000. And incredibly, people buy them. Ori-Peis (pug/shar pei mixes) sell for $1,500!

Turbo is going to the perfect home. It is unbelievably difficult to let him go. My heart is in constant heart-ache but I know I am doing the right thing. In the 7 weeks I've had him, he has become the best dog ever! I love the size of him! However, all the wonderful things about him aside, he needs to be around people 24/7 and his forever home will be perfect. His new owner is a principal of a school and plans to train Turbo to be a part of the school, as a Mascot, of sorts. I can't imagine Turbo loving anything more! He is a people pug!
