What a sad story! Makes me want to go home and tell my sons that if they ever treat me and my dogs with such little regard when I am a little old lady that I will kick their asses and make their life hell.

Renee and MJ - you are awesome!!!

Sage is adorable! They all are! Give snuggles from aunt Tarrington!

Oh that's so sad for the lady! How heartbreaking. I'm glad you guys can step in and help. At least she'll know they will have wonderful homes.

This is so true. It really, really bothers me that this elderly lady was not only forced to move in with her son due to medical, but then she had to give up her beloved dogs. I just cannot imagine how upset she is. I would think her health is not going to improve with such an emotional blow.

What do you do in circumstances like this? Do you forward non-identifying pics and an adoption overview or something to the old owner to soothe her mind after adoption has occured? Or do you have a "Nil Information" rule after surrender? Rescues here have different views on this, heavens, as many as the day is long...

It really depends on each situation.

My last foster, bless him, was a difficult owner surrender. We kept in touch with his previous owner throughout the time we had him, and I called and cried over the phone with her after we sent him to the bridge.

I don't think we actively try and keep communication going, but some people will call and check up on the pugs they surrendered. For some of those that call, we don't even call them back or reply to emails (because they are just trying to dump their guilt - they don't give a crap about the dog). For others, we do talk and reassure them that everything is okay. In this case, I think we will just reassure the lady that her dogs are being well taken care of and in wonderful homes and hope she moves on. What we have to remember here is that her son didn't just "make" her get rid of the pugs - her pugs were in danger because of the son's big dogs. Look at the pics from MaryJo. Pirate Pete was attacked and injured by the big dogs. So... no matter how heart broken the lady was to give them up, there was a good reason for it.
