Hey, NIPRA!
You guys getting a pug named Celia from the shelter with a suspected collapsed lung?
Small world, but someone from the shelter had emailed us looking for info on collapsed lungs in pugs. Guess she found us on RDIC (Yahoo group). Anyway she just said she'd found a rescue for her and I'm assuming it's you guys.

Wow, that's weird! Small world! Yes, Celia is in one of our best foster homes as of yesterday afternoon. She is tiny & very skinny (10 pounds). There's a possibility that she could have megaesophagus too. I'll try to post some pics later.

Re: Hey, NIPRA!
I wondered about that when the contact person asked about collapsed lung. I suggested torsion or maybe megaesophagus.
I hope she does well. And I hope it's not megaesophagus.

Oh, darling girl. She is so skinny! I hope she can put some weight on, and her collapsed lung can be healed.
Re: Hey, NIPRA!
I love that first pic - she looks like a worried mongoose!
Hoping her recovery will be straigtforward.

Re: Hey, NIPRA!
Celia had some further tests done this past week and she has been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. She's doing ok though. I haven't had a chance to talk to her foster mom yet to find out what our options are as far as treating her.

Well, I'm off to google that since I don't have a clue if that's a terrible diagnosis or an okay one.PugLady3 wrote:Celia had some further tests done this past week and she has been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. Definitely not a good one. It is very similar to megaesophagus - at least her symptoms are anyway. She is regurgitating after every meal, especially if she gets excited or tries play at all. She's not keeping much down despite trying to keep her quiet, doing elevated feedings several times a day, etc. Right now, the prognosis does not look good.

Well, crap. Poor little girl.
Just read up on it. And it's not a great diagnosis at all. Shar Peis seem particularly disposed to this disorder.
Re: Hey, NIPRA!
I have a hiatus hernia and have had for years. Doesn't give me any issues. I wonder what makes it an entirely different matter in dogs? Poor little poppet. She's so tiny. I hope she can be managed.

Right Rona, I just need to stay on acid blockers and eat right, then mine does not bother me.
I hope a solution can be found for this sweet girl
She is awfully adorable!

Re: Hey, NIPRA!
Brenda, I hope there is something that can be done. I'm not sure if that nipra pug named Max that Lori first fostered also had a hiatal hernia or not. He had something besides the megaesophagus that was causing him issues. If I remember correctly, there was something like a pouch that had developed due to the megaesophagus.

Re: Hey, NIPRA!
I know heaps of people with this - some manage it better than others.
This is the first time I have heard of it it a dog. You learn something new every day.
Hugs to the little sweetie.
