Vet appt today

Post  Mel on Sun 16 Jan - 10:53

Yesterday I got home from work and Zoe had gone pee pee on her pad I leave for her in her room. Unfortunately, there was blood. Crying or Very sad I later remembered it was odd that she wanted ot go out more than usual the night before. So we have an appt today with the vet. I hope it's not much! We'd appreciate good thoughts.

Lots of good thoughts that it's nothing too serious and whatever it is is easily treated.

Do you have any of thos cranberry blend tablets that Solid Gold put out? I might start her on those if you have them or can find something similar.

Prayers coming your way for the beautiful Ms. Zoe and her Mama!

Wow, urinary problems going all around!

Poor Zoe. I hope she's okay, and some antibiotics do the trick!

And, if you do get antibiotics, don't do the cranberry until you are done with the cycle of antibiotics. They don't mix well.

For whatever reason, we have an epidemic of struvites crystals in our rescue right now. So hopefully, it's an infection and/or crystals.

As Renee said, DON'T do cranberries while she is on antibiotics and DON'T do cranberries until you know if she has struvites. Cranberries will make things much worse if she has calcium oxalate crystals--assuming she has crystals at all.

We have seen two cases of struvites without any infection being found. Sterile struvites are theoretically rare in dogs, but we have one confirmed case and possibly two.

Hilary and I both have a ton of information on crystals if you need it.

You only use cranberries with struvite crystals to lower the pH (so also ask what her pH is--should be between 5.5 and 7.2). We get pH test strips and test urinary pH while on cranberries until the pH gets to about 6-6.5 then we stop with the cranberries. While they are on the cranberries (either frozen cranberries cut up into their food or the Berry Balance supplement) they get it at every meal until the pH is normal.

We flood all our UTI/crystal dogs food with water and optimally, get them off of kibble for life--especially if there is any history of UTIs. You want to keep the system flushed out and water or unsalted chicken stock does that. Although I don't have any dogs with UTI or crystal issues, I routinely flood their raw food with water at every meal just to be on the safe side.

that's funny you mention that because I always add water to her food. I ran out of HK and have been feeding her kibble with the occassional green beans. She's never had a UTI before. Maybe this caused it? or not..she was always getting the kibble, so I didn't just introduce it to her diet. Just trying to save some $$ by cutting down on the HK.

our appt is in 1 hr so I'll ask about the PH. Thanks!

p.s. she didn't go while I was at work today, so hopefully she'll be able to hold it until the vet appt? I'm betting she goes outside the office. lol

Back from the vet. He did an xray and didn't see any stones. Thinks it's a UTI. Sent me home with antibiotics and will call me tomorrow with the urinalysis results.

poor Zoe!!! I hope it's "just" a UTI, easily treated with antibiotics and she's all good.

Give her a gentle snuggle from me.

Glad to hear it is only a UTI. Gidget just got over a UTI also. I was wondering HK could have had anything to do with it also. She had stones in the past, but it has been a few years since we have had stones or a UTI....hmm.

Has anyone found that UTI's are more common in wet weather? Maybe something to do with the few drops of urine that are left on their parts not drying so quickly and therefore a better home for fresh bacteria to move up into the bladder?
Just a thought.
Actually you would think humid climates would be worse than very cold ones if that is the case, logically.

We were wondering this as well, Angela and my current theory is that dogs tend to pee less often or maybe not empty their bladders in the inclement weather. And I do wonder if they drink less in the cold weather and therefore don't flush the system as much.

Sophie's last UTI was last Feb. So you could be onto something. I know they don't drink water much at all in the winter.
