Make it stop
Make the incomings stop. In the last few days,we got in an unsocialized pug who was abused by a guy. We need a foster home for him with only females and we don't have that at the moment. We are getting a return adoption from THREE years ago (grr), we still have Cosmo at the vet, and we got 2 more calls today that are urgent pugs dumped (1 at a school, 1 at a vet) with bad eye injuries. I know everyone else is in the same boat, and we can't keep up. Even if we have to restrict to emergency only, these are all emergencies..arghh.

Oh there is a cute update on Cosmo though. The same day Cosmo had his surgery, another big dog was brought in by someone who hit it (at least they cared to bring him in!). They thought they might have to put him down too but he made it through surgery and has his cage side by side with Cosmo, so the are best buddies. I wish we could adopt them out together! But, it's a pit and we have a hard enough time adopting out pugs at the moment.
Re: Make it stop
ugh Saira, what an awful situation for you guys.
Not any consolation, but it's bad here too. We picked up 4 pugs yesterday from emergency situations - in the middle of an ice storm.
Also trying to get an emergency pick up from down near Houston - intact female, and we're so afraid where she might end up if we don't scoop her up soon.
Our volunteers deserve sainthood. All rescue volunteers deserve sainthood.

They deserve retirement too!!
Yeah it's so bad everywhere. And so many people dump their pugs (well all animals) for such stupid reasons (ahem..new puppy), we wouldn't be swamped if people took their commitment seriously and left rescue to only those that truly need it.

Wow, that is unbelievable! If I lived closer I would so be helping you out!
You are all amazing for doing what you do! How do you ever get anything else done?

Damn, damn, damn. I really, really wish you could send them to Alaska. We have the room, and we have the demand.
Edit to add: Saira, I wish I could do more. I just sent a $100 donation.

Honestly, it's getting harder and harder every day. Rescue wouldn't be that bad if we were all retired and rich! And absolutely no one seems to understand this isn't our actual job.

Yep. Or that we don't sit around in a state of suspended animation only coming alive to meet THEIR needs for THEIR dog.Saira wrote:juneau hunter wrote:Wow, that is unbelievable! If I lived closer I would so be helping you out!

Things just seem to have gotten worse. I understand the impact of the worsening economy, but most of our increased surrenders aren't for that. It's just plain old dog dumping and nothing more.

I'd agree with that for the most part. CraigsList is a scary place to read and all the classic dog dumping excuses are there.

Damn, Saira. You guys are being seriously swamped. I sent just a donation. Wish it were more but things are tight.

Re: Make it stop
tell me about it, it's ridiculous! We are telling all owner surrenders there is a waiting list (there is) and are trying to get the shelter/emergency dogs first.

Re: Make it stop
We've received 4 pugs at the shelter in the last month. The latest is an adorable pair who were picked up by the humane officers running down a busy street in a nearby town. Male and female, both intact, and she's obviously been bred more than a couple times. And they're both only about 2 years old.
Fortunately, their owner/exploiter/whatever never came to claim them, so they're both already on hold for pre-approved potential adopters who specifically asked for pugs through our pet request program.

yep, we've been in this mode for a while - we schedule out the owner surrenders and make sure we keep some capacity for shelter/emergency babies first.

I wonder if a Pilots and Paws transport could be arranged?
