Update on Millie -- MRSI Infection
The culture they took from the sore in Millie's wrinkle showed that she has a MRSI infection -- something like the canine equivalent of MRSA in humans. The good news is that the current antibiotic seems to be working. Her swelling is down considerably, and the sore in her wrinkle is much drier and smaller. From what I understood the vet to say, that sort of infection could be present in a dog's mouth or on her skin. The tooth extractions and the swelling of her face caused the infection to flare up. So... We will continue the antibiotic for six weeks and add an antibiotic cream for her nose roll. Maybe we're beginning to see an end to this?
Meanwhile...It was chicken for dinner, chicken for breakfast, chicken for snack time...
That's fine with me!

Well, I'm glad that you found out the issue. Careful with the infection, there, Michael. We had a dog in with that infection, but in his bladder. It can be quite contagious so break out the bleach and antibiotic soaps.

I'm so glad there is an answer and she's responding! And as long as she's eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, who cares what's on the menu? GO MILLIE!!

Blanche, do you mean there's a danger of me contracting it from Millie?

Re: Update on Millie -- MRSI Infection
I don't think there's much risk to you, Michael--more to any other dogs that she may come in contact with. I know with our foster dog, the big issue was that he was incontinent and so his pee would be everywhere and laden with MRSI so the foster home had to do a lot of sterile protocol with him.Millie'sMichael wrote:northernwitch wrote:Well, I'm glad that you found out the issue. I know that with any resistant infection, I'm just extra careful.
I think the bigger risk is if you get bitten or have open sores/wounds. I was trying to google some info for you, but my google is all wacky.

Okay--Google has decided to be kind to me. Here's one of my favourite links out of the University of Guelph:

Re: Update on Millie -- MRSI Infection
Thanks, Blanche. I appreciate the warning. I'll be careful...and Millie is so aloof with other dogs that there's little risk of transmission there.

I am glad Millie is feeling a bit better, and its always good to know the diagnosis, rather than not know.
I wonder if she'll eat other poultry? Turkey, duck?
