Lola has me worried sick

Post  lola's mom on 2/3/2011, 9:47 pm

I am taking her to the Vet at 8am tomorrow.

Last night she started having this hacking awful cough all night long. The Vet thought maybe it could be kennel cough but she has not been around any dogs so I don't think that's it. She had that honking cough with the gag at the end and now tonight it sounds as if she is a bit congested. When we were outside to potty the cold really bothered her and she coughed non stop. Just a bit ago she coughed up a little bit of bile. When she is sitting up right she seems better but once she lays down it starts again.

My heart is absolutely breaking for her I could cry. She is going to be 9 this month and I can't deal with her getting older. Hopefully this is something as simple as a cold and can be treated quickly. I also noticed recently she seems a little weak in her back end, more so with her right leg so we will be checking that out too.

Poor Lola, poor you!! I hope it's nothing worse than kennel cough, which is bad enough. A ton of good thoughts for your baby girl. Just keep her as quiet as possible tonight and of course warm, which I know you will. She's probably snuggled up in your arms in a blankie already. I'll be looking anxiously for a good update. hug dog

It sounds like kennel cough. She could have gotten it off of something that a dog that had it came in contact with outside. It's very contagious. You can always give Robitussin to help ease the coughing while you wait for a vet.

I think I lost my update unless I put it somewhere else. I am so scatter brained.

On my way to the Vet some guy hit my car backing out of his driveway. It is so bad around here with the snow banks. I have yet to deal with that issue.

Lola either has an irritation in her throat or it could be a virus so we are treating with Clavamox and 5ml 3 x a day Robitussen DM. She worries me to death! The Vet said her lungs and heart sounded great and the way she was coughing he was sure it was not her trachea. That was a relief.

I had him look at a growth on her belly and it is a skin tag. I also told him I feel she is a little weak in her hind legs, more so the right one. It's not her knee and he thinks it's a little bit of arthritis so she will be taking a Dasuquin Glucosamine supplement every day.

I am glad to hear it isn't the trachea too!!

However, if she's sick more than a few weeks, I encourage you to get an xray anyway.

Yep--sounds like KC to me, too. And Marci is right--all a dog has to do is have contact with something (grass, snowbank, stick) that another dog with KC has coughed, sneezed, drooled, etc on and that can be enough for her to get it.

However, if it's viral the antibiotics won't do much except avoid a secondary or tertiary infection. They tend to cough most after exercise or while sleeping. It's a God awful sound.

I hope she improves quickly.

How bad am I! The Vet reminded me Lola was turning 8 not 9 this month. I swear I am losing my mind. Lol.

Lola's cough does sound like kennel cough and when we go outside it really gets bad. So far Logan is fine. I'll be getting a report from her dog walker in a little bit to see if she is still hacking up a lung. I gave her cough syrup before I left and she was resting. Now I could use a weeks worth of sleep! All night I kept thinking I would be making an emergency visit to the hospital. I haven't slept in 2 days.

The Vet said if she is not better by Tuesday to give them a call. I hope I don't have to make that call.

Kennel cough is almost always straightforward -- a nice hacking cough with or without nasal congestion, lasting anywhere from 3 to 7 days. We see it quite often at the shelter where I work, as you might imagine.

Here's wishing Lola a speedy recovery, and you some much-needed rest!

Lola had a GREAT night and finally slept without coughing!! I gave her the robitussen right before bed so I am not sure if that is why but she is still doing well this morning. She coughed once or twice outside but that's it.
I'm going to finish the round of Clavamox just in case.
