Rescuers: do you have Compassion Fatigue?

Post  Puggered on 2/8/2011, 2:07 am

This is an older study, but I had never seen it before so though I'd share in case some of you haven't either.

If you look on page 2 it gives permission to share as long as (a) authors are credited,
(b) no changes are made, & (c) it is not sold. So if you share the document in full, it covers (a) and (b) and none of us are lowlife enough to try (c).

The bulk of it is a questionnaire you can take to estimate your risk for rescue burnout and how you score on Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue.
I guess, like all quizzes, it is only accurate if you interpret each question exactly as the writer intended (which is impossible unless you are the writer at that exact stage of his/her life) but I think it can give a reasonable trend.

So when you have a spare philosophic moment, take the quiz and see how you score.
Who am I kidding? Who has spare moments? Still, I am tucking it away in my "might be useful one day" box.

So here is the link: Compassion Fatigue Questionnaire

I'm afraid to take the test.....

But the instructions are a bit vague. It says to read each statement and write the number that honestly reflects how frequently you experience various characteristics in the last week. So are we talking weekly? Daily? For example--one of the statements is "I feel connected to others". How do I numerically score that? By a number 1 as I felt it this week? As a number 7 as I felt it every day of the week? You could get wildly different results from people depending on how they interpret the scoring system. Unless you are utterly fried in which case I assume you would never feel or rarely feel any of the positive statements.

I did it this way....I had a scale of zero to ten, zero obviously being never and ten being extremely frequently and scaled them that way.

If a statement was true for me a few times during the last week I would score it 2 or 3, if it was true for me almost daily I would score 5 or 6, if true multiple times most days then it would get the 10.

I was too scared to actually add up my score except in compassion satisfaction and that made me happy!
