Chunky Monkey
Ok, that's not his name but Brutus is 37 lbs! He's totally gorgeous. The family gave a bunch of reasons for giving him up, but when our vet checked him out, he's pretty much infected from head to toe-teeth are bad, skin is bad, ears are terrible. My friend who picked him up said it was a very sad surrender, he was looking at the door the whole time and his owner (a tough looking guy) broke down. We think they just fell on hard times.

Re: Chunky Monkey
Aww, I love his wrinkly face! I'm sure you guys will get him fixed up in no time.

Re: Chunky Monkey
He is so handsome! What a looker! I hate when we think the pugs are sad to go. I hate that the people waited till he is in such bad shape before they did anything.
I picked up a 8 yr old from the Memphis shelter last week and he was in so much pain from his teeth. He was shaking and wouldn't even try to eat. I went and got him some canned and even then when he did eat, it looked like he was still suffering. The tramadol helped and he had his dental a week ago today and is doing better, but still a little tentative about the whole chewing thing.

Oh, he looks like Tarrington's Rosco!
He is just darling. How sad he has infections all over. I would love to foster him until he gets all better. Does the vet know what the skin infections are?
Saira, I am continuously amazed by how hard SNPR gets hit. Maybe because I hear about so much of it from you - but I just cannot believe it!

I haven't heard an update yet (he's still at our vet). I'm assuming either yeast and/or allergies from food.
We aren't hit as badly as some of the other rescues and areas, but it does seem to be getting worse and worse. The pugs who do come in almost always have some issue now, whereas a few years ago we'd see (mostly) healthy ones. But I think people gave up vet visits when our economy went south.

Man I hate to hear stories like that.

I totally agree with this -- we're seeing some animals in truly horrifying condition being surrendered at the shelter lately, much more than usual. Especially "haircut" breeds (shih tzus, Lhasas, etc.) with densely matted coats -- seems like taking the dog to a groomer dropped out of a lot of folks' budgets in recent years.
Love your newbie, Saira! Someone out there is going to find themselves with a great big hunk o' pug love.

Ditto--we see the same./ We always had a fairly high number of costly dogs, but now they are almost always costly. I think we figured out that our average vet cost per dog was $1,500.SacramentoPugs wrote:Saira wrote:The pugs who do come in almost always have some issue now, whereas a few years ago we'd see (mostly) healthy ones. Poor little guy, what a sweet face. Hoping for everything to be fixed quickly and a new home even quicker.

The vet just called. He lost 6 teeth. They also flushed his ears as they were nasty. He has a yeast infection in his wrinkles and armpits and ears. And his wrinkles are really bad. He also got a medicated bath. Poor guy! He must have been feeling crappy for awhile.

Yeah I'd be pinching his cheeks all day long like I do with Hooligan.
