non allergic bones?

Post  Mel on 2/17/2011, 6:30 pm

the vet thinks Zoe's booty scootin is due to allergies. he called them, "ears and rears". her ears have been bad too. SO..he said to get rid of her rawhides. I can't get myself to do it! she just LOVES her bones.

any suggestion on non allergic bones? if there is such a thing....

Zoe and I thank you!

You could try deer antler, although it's made of the same basic stuff as rawhide (i.e. keratin) it is totally unprocessed and I think that would make a difference. I also let them chomp away on deer antler indoors where bones are messier and are outdoor chews. Bully sticks are another option, or good old raw marrowbones.

I actually don't give rawhide to my pugs as they have been known to choke on the last fragments and I hate that yecchy tug-of-war trying to get those dangerous ends from them. They see me coming and hurriedly try to gulp them down before I can take their treasure away, which causes them to choke on said treasure and I have to fish it out...so you can see I don't like the hassle of rawhide.

You can try sterilized bones-you can get them at Petsmart. Some have fillings but you can get them plain too!
Mine love them, even plain.

Rhoda used to love those sterilized bones too, but she cracked a tooth on one once. I think that's pretty rare, though. Those might be a good option for Zoe.

Marlee adores bully sticks -- I get the chemical-free no-odor ones from www.bestbullysticks.com. Bully sticks are great because they don't get soggy like rawhide. They just gradually get eaten, a tiny bit at a time.

I always have deer antlers. I'm sure she's love the pighide treats but I only allow those outside because they get a little greasy (and it's hard to find them made in the US). As a special treat I get them buffalo bully stick but they are expensive. I saw some Bison tendons the other day on the internet and I'm thinking about trying those.

Mel:
She could very well be reacting to all the other stuff in the rawhides. I don't use them as I think they are risky for allergy dogs and do have a choking and blockage risk (in my opinion). You never know what's been used to dry/preserve/cure the hide and she could be reacting to that.

I use bully sticks/pizzles, smoked tartar bones (although I'm careful with these as Tank has broken a tooth on one and not all of the bones agree with him), Texas Toothpicks (dehydrated cow's tail), salmon skin chewies. I also get fresh raw elk bones from a local market.
