Blanche, she can be a little rat sometimes! I can normally trade when it comes to something else that has little value to her, the bullies no way. I forget about cheese, next time she gets into the tp I'll try cheese, I always have some in the refrig.

Becky what are the bones you got?

They're like this http://www.redbarninc.com/pc-26-13-white-bone.aspx not filled because I didn't want anything that would upset their tummies. On the label it said "center cut femur" I believe, they're very heavy.

Thanks, do they chip or break down easily?

My three chewed on them for about 30 minutes before I took them away, and there wasn't even a dent on any of them. They do have a warning about splintering, so I'll watch for that. The guy at PetSmart said his dogs do get itty bitty chunks off (he said it looks funny when they poop), but I'd imagine this is no different than Nylabones and other chews that break down over time.

Hopefully these really are safe, but if anyone has a concern, please let me know!

I give them to my gang, and haven't had any issues with them. I know they can splinter, but after they chew them, I inspect it for cracks. I always buy the empty ones and put peanut butter in it.

Lola and Logan get a couple of scoops of Wellness chicken stew mixed in with their kibble.
I have to laugh because Logan is finished in a split second but Lola takes her sweet little time eating and it tortures Logan.

My girls diet is - kibble for EARLY brekky, denta-stick for morning tea, and main meal canned ("Nature's Gift" which has varieties of chicken or lamb or kangaroo or veal or beef, with combinations of pasta or rice or oats (I know, allergy alert, but my girls are fine with it) and vegetables. There are no additives in the can. They also get grated carrot and a spoonful of unsweetened, fat-free yogurt. And a can of sardines every now and again.

And Mandy, please don't think we're ganging up on you, but please, a little diplomacy in getting information across wouldn't go astray. You have done your work in becoming well educated in nutrition and have a lot of good information to impart, but don't turn people off while imparting that message. I guess it's something that one of your tender years is still learning and us ol' hags that have been around for ever, GET. Thanks mate! Very Happy

Hmm, I never thought of grated carrots, Viv adores carrots but once aagin it is something I have stopped giving her because she choked on one once...and sardines I never thought of that. If I can stomach opening a can I'll give that a try, just one right, or a few chopped up in their food?

The animal nutritionist I studied with always put it this way as far as quality of food is concerned: "When you look at nutritional value of foods, the less processed the food, the higher the nutritional punch. So, the order from lowest nutritional value to highest would be Kibble, Canned, Raw".

Kibble has the most processing and usually the most additives because it has to be able to go through the extruder to make those little chunks.

I give sardines as well, or canned jack mackerel or salmon. Get the sardines in water (not oil or mustard sauce). I give one to two sardines per pug. We try and get fish at least once a week in their meals.

Thanks, since I don't eat any meat or fish I just don't have it tuned in to my weekly shopping. I will have to make a list of all of this extra foods to add to their diet.

Hey, that's a great idea, Renee! I never thought of it. I love sardines. It's a superfood! How often do you give it to them?

I try to do fish once or twice a week. They love sardines!! I would give them fresh, but I can never find fresh ones, so I just buy the canned sardines.

We do the same. My crew get fish twice a week. One meal sardines and one meal canned Jack Mackeral.

That Jack Makeral is a steal! Cheaper than some canned food. And, I love that it isn't just all mush. It comes out whole and my pugs go nuts for the stuff!

Frozen sardines are a good option if you can't get fresh. I remove the tails and fins because they are a little sharp. The heads are okay but there is a hard part around the gills which I usually remove. And cutting them up is easier if they are still a little frozen.

D: I look forward to the report on this... I get the "fish" in via a capsule dropped into their bowl one a day... makes their coats noticeably soft soft soft (even the terriers'!)... I do not believe I could do the be-heading... plus the disposal of such a morsel, well, I guess I could throw them into my river an watch the geese and ducks kill each other over them?? But I am not going to try that any time soon... can't we get them canned, headed, tailed or diced already??

LOL. Yes, it's a little gross. Don't behead them, though. The head has the best nutrients, eyes and all. I try to think of something else as I'm doing it. Having said all this, Denver absolutely won't eat it - something about the scales, I think, as he is fine with canned jack mackerel.
