RIP Sassy Cat

Post  puglouie on 7/14/2011, 3:24 pm

We lost Sassy Cat today. She and I spent 17 years together, surviving five moves, her fall off the deck and me developing an allergy to cats. She developed kidney disease several years ago but we managed it for a long time and she fought the good fight. In the last few days, her kidneys started to fail her, she stopped eating and lost her sight. I let her take in the sunlight on the deck a couple of days but she just sat there, unmoving for hours. Finally, last night, I brought her into the bedroom for the night and lay her bed next to ours so she knew I was there (I'm really horribly allergic to cats now so she couldn't sleep in the bed anymore). This morning, I took her to the vet and I was there with her when she peacefully left this world with the grace of all great cats.
It was she who sat on top of my computer monitor when I wrote my first novel, my loud little muse. She probably never forgave me for getting a flat-screen monitor or for bringing those damned pugs into the house. Godspeed Sassy the Vocal - you lived up to your namesake (Sarah Vaughn) and gave me companionship when I had no one -- outside of my family it's the longest continual relationship of my life so far. May you meet Louie at the bridge and find bowls of tuna and catnip and beams of sunlight to roll around in.

My Sam was 17 when he left us - a long, good life, and it still hurts like hell. I am so sorry for your loss, Elizabeth. Such a beautiful girl. I will say a prayer for her tonight.
