Happy GotchaBirfDay, Penny Lane!

Six years ago today I was driving from Reno to Santa Rosa, CA, in Peg's old van, to meet you and bring you home. It was one of the best days of my life, and it was love at first sight. As my friend Diane says, I was and still am totally smitten. I well remember driving home with Gidget the nutjob in the back seat and sharing an In and Out burger with you along the way. After we got home (and dropped off Gidget at Auntie Peg's), you met Sam the Cat and we took our first walkie around the neighborhood. All of our furniture had gone on to Ohio, and I was sleeping on a raised Aerobed. I carefully put your bed next to mine, climbed into bed and turned off the light. You let me know right away that your rightful place was in the Big Bed with me, and we have slept together every night since then in motor homes, motels, hotels, houses, and apartments. I don't think I could sleep without your warm body next to mine and your gentle snore in my ears. We moved together from Reno to Ohio and back to Sparks, and have crossed the country six times together. You are the very best traveling companion ever. You have brought me more happiness than I could ever have imagined. Your unconditional love has gotten me through some very low times. You have trained me well, and have me at your bark and call, and I wouldn't have it any other way. We both have gotten a lot greyer and creakier in our time together. Your hips are a little stiffer, but, then, so are mine. Our walkies are shorter, but you still have to read all the pee-mail and find the perfect blade of grass to water. Bob said it well, "Pottying Penny is a process, not an event." I will never know exactly how old you are, or when your birthday is, so today is your 14th birthday and 6th gotcha day. I am thankful that our karmas brought us together in this lifetime. Each day with you is a gift and a lesson in love.

Happy Birfday Penny Lane!

Penny Lane here. Thank you all for your good wishes. I think I really did hit the jackpot with my momma. My big day was very special with many cheese treats and freeze-dried liver treats and some extra kibble in my bobalot. And momma kept me on her lap most of the day and just loved all over me. She didn't get me any toys, because playing with toys is beneath my black diva dignity, but she sure gave me a ton of love, and an extra-long massage with lavender oil last night when we got into the Big Bed. She says a prayer every night about how sentient beings have all been our very own mothers, and then she tells me that I surely have been her mother, her child, her friend, and her sister in many lives. I don't know about that, but I do know that I love her and she loves me.
