Izzy the pug (rescue)

I think most have seen this on FB, but we got an owner surrender yesterday of a pug with an "eye infection".

The lady called me yesterday morning and said her pug had an eye infection and she could not afford to take her to the vet. It had been infected for a few days and she thought she should just surrender her. So I said, yes, of course we will take her. I know pug eyes are sensitive, so I suggested we just meet at pet emergency for the surrender.

So, I took the surrender and hustled this poor girl in to the emergency clinic. Lucky for us, the ophthalmologist was in the office that day. Although we could have technically "saved the eye", it was a non-functioning eye, and so there was no point to saving it and risking future problems. We elected for enucleation. Even better, the specialist donated his fee, so we only paid $680. Whew!

And, this morning, feeling much better. Last night was rough. She was in so much pain!



She is a sweet girl and will be a wonderful companion to someone once she is all healed up. I am trying not to be cranky about the previous owner... but, grr! Why did they wait a few days? The eye could have been saved!

OMG... horrific! She'll be an adorable little winker, though, once she's feeling better. And you know I've got a soft spot for the winkers.

Oh my dog! That poor baby! To cause suffering like that, even through ignorance, is just unforgiveable.

Good God Almighty. Glad she got into you and had the eye removed.

She looks like a sweetie.

thankfully dogs adapt so well. I know she'll make someone a great lil companion!

Yes, I agree Nancy. It is unforgivable. I can understand, sort of, that she could not afford vet care.... but, why let this go on for so long? Isn't think what credit cards are for? Izzy is a very sweet girl. Curious and alert, now that she is feeling better today. Likes to eat. She's 6 years old, unspayed, never been to the vet. A very pretty girl, and I think she will be a cutie as a winker.

Personal vent: I try, I really try, not to be judgmental - but it's hard. The woman that showed up to surrender was driving a GMC Yukon, newer than my car (which is a 2002). She had on nice, professional clothing, and was obviously well kept (nice hair, makeup, etc). Tell me, could she really not afford a vet visit? If she had handled this when it first happened, the eye might have been saved. How could she go home each night and see that eye and not do anything?

I'm glad that Izzy is with you now though and thankful that she'll have a better life from here on out. Give that sweet girl a big from me!

Izzy must have been in unimaginable pain with that eye. It is so, so hard not to be judgmental in these situations, isn't it - I think most of us in rescue have learned the hard way that the best thing is always to keep quiet, get the release papers signed, grab the dog and run for the vet.

And what a darling girl - she's going to be a wonderful companion for some lucky person!

I don't get it, but some people just should not have animals.



Glad she is in good hands now and will find a loving home that will fill her new life with joy.

Oh that poor little girl. Praying for a quick recovery and a wonderful forever home for Izzy.

Nothing will stop me from being judgemental. PIECE OF CRAP HUMAN BEING FOR LETTING A DOG SUFFER WITH THAT!!!!!



Thank DOG she at least had enough of a functioning brain to make her give poor Izzy up to you and not dump her at a shelter.

Rona, I do love you! For the sake of rescue, I try to keep my judging to myself. But, yes. How could any human being look at such suffering? I am grateful she surrendered her, I only wish it had been sooner so Izzy's eye could have been saved.

Today is day 3 after surgery. Izzy is doing wonderful. She is such a little imp. She loves to play with stuffies and is always in a good mood. Her missing eye does not bother her in the least.

I think that eye was that bad for longer than 'a few days'... GRRRRRRR.........



I am sure her pain is mostly gone with that horrible eye gone. I loved the video of her trying to play with a toy with the cone on.

What a cutie! I'm sorry she had such a horrible, selfish owner before. Glad to hear she's not slowed by the loss of her eye, I'm sure she was in so much pain. I hope she finds the perfect forever family soon.

I am so glad to hear that she is doing well. And her former owner will have to deal with the results of her actions. If not now, in a future life. That's what I keep telling myself.

Izzy had her follow up visit with the vet today. And, we have determined what we think is the reason for her eye.

Sadly, Izzy also has a puncture wound on her hind quarters and a rip in her ear on the same side as the lost eye. We feel, based on the evidence, that she was in some sort of dog fight or attacked. I don't know why I torture myself, but I just went and re-read the initial message from the old owner. It said that Izzy spends most of her time outside and that she had the "eye infection" for a few days (3-4). The wounds on her ear and her hiney are healing, so yes, she was probably injured a week ago. Lord help me - was she outside with that eye like that? Did another dog attack her? I am in tears here.
