Flight help

Post  MackandMattiesMom on 8/19/2011, 11:58 am

Anybody have any ideas which airlines allow pets in cabin? I think I've found Dory a new forever home, but the home is in Idaho. Dory will have to be flown out (I'll accompany her of course) and I have no idea where to start. We'll be flying from Tampa or Orlando to Spokane. I'm pretty sure Continental allows pets, but what other airlines? Thanks!

I think Alaska Airlines does too.

I cannot say enough good things about Southwest
Continental was my second choice when I was researching, but very pricey

SW does and is probably one of the cheapest also. And they're fabulous!!

American Airlines did at one point, not sure if they still do.

Check out www.airfarewatchdog.com - they have a chart on their website that lists all the airlines that allow pets and their fees.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize SW allowed pets. That's who I usually use when I fly. Love them!

Thanks so much for suggesting Southwest. It looks like everyone is pretty even on pricing, except most charge $100 - $150 for her to travel. Southwest also only has us changing planes once, where the others have us changing twice with much longer flight times, up to 13 hours!! That's way too much for Dory. If she were any other dog I wouldn't be as concerned, but she was crated at a vet for 6 months by a previous rescue and is really anxious with a crate. I'm going to start working with her to get her used to it for short amounts of time. I also have a mild sedative to try with her if needed.

**I'm going to start working with her to get her used to it for short amounts of time. I also have a mild sedative to try with her if needed.**

I built a box that mimicked the underseat dimensions (they are online if you Google) and had the DappleDuo nap in their new kennel in there at least an hour a day together.
I brought Benedryl & Tavist with me and dropped ice chips in the crate to entertain them. I took the seat in the back (paid for early bird to get what I wanted) next to the window so I could tuck the boys in without people trying to seat themselves. Most passengers seem to want the front. I don't mind waiting to get off the plane to go wait at another terminal ... and at destination, it cuts down on the time waiting for checked bags.

The vet gave me a small dose of Valium and some acepromazine to try and see which one works best for her. I'll be trying them out this week and see which works best. I'll probably end up being way more anxious than she is. Thanks for the tips on seating. I don't mind sitting in the back either. Much easier that way, I'm sure.

Sooo much easier!! and you get to peek out the window, and they get the slight cool from the skin of the plane. My huge concern was body heat building up with both of them in the crate.

So do they have to be kept in the crate in the terminal or does it depend on where you are? I want to get there plenty early to make sure I'm all checked in and situated on time. I don't want her to be stuck in the kennel the entire time though. I suppose if she's out and not supposed to be, someone will let me know. Laughing

They are supposed to be crated in the terminal ... but I always got the boys out, sat in an inconspicuous place and made them tell me to put them away. I'd rather they have even 5 mins to stretch their legs than travel always cooped up.
Look to see what terminals have a dog Yard and how close it is to your gate. Houston's sucked (!!), but it was still better than nothing.

We have a 3-hour layover in Denver on the way and I've heard they have a nice spot for dogs. That's our only stop along the way.

Sabra, they say you're supposed to keep them in their carrier at all times inside the airport. When I'm walking from the ticket counter to my gate or from gate to gate, I keep Grace in her stroller - she doesn't like to leash walk around people, otherwise I'd have her on her leash walking beside me - and then when we're at the gate, I take her out of her stroller and keep her on my lap. I've never had anyone tell me she can't be out of her carrier. In fact, I've had the gate agents ooh and ahh over her while she's sitting on my lap at the gate!!

In Tulsa and in Tuscon, the gate and flight crews were over the moon about the boys, who were sitting in the terminal seats beside me. In san Diego, the were 'frisked' by a TSA owned by Doxies. KC was not up to a pat down and the guy saw that. Offered the back of his hand and called it good when KC gave a half hearted lick.
You meet so many good dog people everywhere.

Thanks for all the advice. Looks like we'll be flying out on Sept 13th to Idaho and leaving on the 16th to come home. I have a 3 hour layover in Denver on the way and only 1-1/2 hours in Vegas on the way back. I wish it was 3 hours in Vegas as I've never been. I'll barely have time to play the slots while running to the gate!!
